My son is 17 and a type 1 diabetic. At bedtime, his sugar level is about 110-140. How much lantus is required?

How long has your son been on Lantus? What had the doctor put as the starting dose? If your son has started just recently, you will start with a small dose-- as the doctor recommends and then keep going from that point. The Lantus is used mostly at the bedtime hours and works for the entire day (24 hours), then you have to take it again at the same time each night with a bed time snack. I had used it for a long time, then the insurance company decided to not pay for any of it. I had to switch brands of insulin and get the doctor to give a new prescription. I'm also a type 1 diabetic.

He is taking from last one year, Doctor advised about 10 units. Sometime if bedtime sugar level is 140+ he is taking 10 units, and fasting become 140 - 150 or more and many times if bedtime sugar level is 120-130, he takes 7 units lantus, then mid night (3 am) sugar level is about 80-90.

what should be the bed time snack ? How much quantity?
