Hi All,

I am 27 years old. I was diagnosed with type 2 Dibetes 5 months back. I fainted in the office and my doctor checked my blood sugar. It was 600. From then, i started insulin for one month and then amaryl 1 mg for 2 months. Since last month, the doctor has suggested to take metformin 500mg 3 times a day. My average fasting sugar is 110 and PP is 140. Please advise if I'm going in the right direction. I eat 2-3 chapati (wheat) at breakfast , lunch and dinner. Also, I have a snack at 6 PM with sukha bhel or any besan item( I assume besan has low GI).

Metformin is used alone or with other medications, including insulin, to treat type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and, therefore, cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood). Metformin is in a class of drugs called biguanides. Metformin helps to control the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood. It decreases the amount of glucose you absorb from your food and the amount of glucose made by your liver. Metformin also increases your body's response to insulin, a natural substance that controls the amount of glucose in the blood.

Glimepiride (generic name) Amaryl (brand name) is used along with diet and exercise, and sometimes with other medications, to treat type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and, therefore, cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood). Glimepiride lowers blood sugar by causing the pancreas to produce insulin (a natural substance that is needed to break down sugar in the body) and helping the body use insulin efficiently. This medication will only help lower blood sugar in people whose bodies produce insulin naturally.

You should give more importance to aerobic exercise and diabetes education.

Please note that blood sugar level < 40 mg/dL and > 500 mg/dL requires urgent medical attention.

When blood sugar level falls below 72 mg/dL, you may feel hypoglycemia. Treatment may include:

* Drinking juice

* Eating food

* Glucose tablets

Consult your doctor once in every 3 months.
