When were you seen by your current doctor? Is the 7.4 your blood sugar, or the A1c? The A1c is a "picture" of the last 3-4 months as to how your blood sugars have been reacting to your daily life style and diet. If the 7.4 is your blood sugar, that converts to 133 when you multiply by 18. That number isn't very high, but could be a little lower depending on what your doctor recommends. How high/low does your doctor want you to be running at? Do they have you counting carbs. for each snack and meal? What exercise rutine do they have you doing? Is it every day or every other day?
Yes with your age 7 to 7.2/7.4 is ok.I am also 0f 71 years.my doctor also advised for 7 to 7.2.Once I tried for below 7 and I had severe Hypo problem many number of times. So Your doctors advise is ok.

The number and dose both are not okay.
7.4 not acceptable. Neither once a day metformin. Is your doctor an endo / diabetologist?
If your blood sugar reading is 7.4 mmol/L (133mg/dL), then it is normal. Please be cautious, if you get low blood sugar ie, less than 4 mmol/L (72 mg/dL).
