Many persons with diabetes complain that they feel lethargic and sleepy all day. Has it to do any thing with increased blood sugar ?

Our body thinks different from what we think.

Our Body gets energy in 2 ways. 1) by food / diet 2) by sleep.

When we are dieting, meaning reduced in-take of foods, tend to get us more sleep, as body wants to conserve energy.

Nothing to do blood sugar.

I m not so sure about that rsridar. I have been on a LCHF diet for 8 weeks, 800 calories a day. I have lost 14 pounds weight, joined an extra dance class and have more energy than I ve had for years. Maybe the tiredness you mention depends on the kind of diet one chooses to follow. JanR

Sorry sridhar.

Most of the times Lethargy- feeling sleepy is the symptom that first raises the suspicion of diabetes. Sleepiness is the result of nonutilisation of glucose by muscles. So we feel very much tired all the time and want to sleep.

sleep never gets you energy in the terms that food gets.

During sleep our body does away with all the wastes produced. Our brain gets a long recess and the muscles get rid of lactic acid produced during the day time activity.

Actually the physiology of sleep is still poorly understood.

And our body doesn't think anything. There is a balance and couner balance everywhere in the body. And when this system is disturbed we get disease

i myself experienced this problem. When the sugar level is high, we tend to feel sleepy. Certainly after lunch. Very rarely potassium deficient people also feel sleep. But this is easily corrected with the intake of potassium chloride solution twice a day, eating potassium rich foods, such as bananas, sweet potatoes. But they should not be in addition to food. They should be part of the food.Otherwise sugar level still goes up.

Yes raised blood sugar levels may be one of the reasons for excessive sleepiness and become normal when blood sugar levels are near normal

Generally eating less leads to more alertness and less sleepy

Eating a heavy meal expecially high carb meal leads to sleepiness and drowsiness

All will agree with this

So the logic expressed by rsridhar220962 Does not hold any water jan-ran

This will be confirmed by anyone who reads this

Sleepiness also happens and is expressed as an indication of Insulin resistance while there are many more reasons for sleepiness..

"Eating a heavy meal expecially high carb meal leads to sleepiness and drowsiness  "

Rightly said but it happens in ND also. It has nothing to do with diabetes. When we take heavy meal the blood is shunted to the digestive tract because obviously the git has to work hard. Brain also gets less blood and we feel sleepy.

Diabetes is different story. Here even if you eat less our body can't utilize glucose. So we feel tired and sleepy all the time if not under treatment

Eating less brings the anti stress hormones into play because of lower sugar levels. These are hormones of "fright " "fight " and "flight ". So they bring alertness.

My god.

Wom pro claims to influence pituitary gland and as per the claim made by the company it's panacea for all the problems of your body.

Wow. I'm wonder-struck.

Yes, sleepiness is one of the signs, esp after a meal. But then I also noticed that I would get insomnia when BG is too high.  So, this is a rather paradoxical situation and it looks like you can't win with this drat disease.

Insomnia , specially at night,  sometimes happen with hyperglycaemia . It is because kidney wants to flush out excessive glucose in blood leading to very frequent urination. This is cause of very disturbed sleep or insomnia.

in reply topatliputra

I don't get polyuria nowadays though this was a problem when I first got T2DM. I suspect the high BG level keeps me alert and awake - otherwise I'll sleep well without the disturbed sleep you mentioned. And oh, another thing I also noticed is that when the BG is high at night, I'll not be able to wake up early [this is a very good indicator] the next day, and even when I try to prolong the sleep session, one gets drowsy/sleepy - there is still the lingering feeling that one has not slept enough.

I am also a victim of this disorder for sometime. Studied lot on net but still clueless. I have DM2 apparently controlled through LCHF diet and lots of standards drugs. But I fall asleep now and then during day time. I do understand every person is different. I somehow suspected my high dose of metformin (2.5 gm/day) to cause this effect to me. Not sure. Hi carb is just not possile.
