Abstract

We recently proposed that the biological markers improved by carbohydrate restriction were precisely those that define the metabolic syndrome (MetS), and that the common thread was regulation of insulin as a control element. We specifically tested the idea with a 12-week study comparing two hypocaloric diets (approximately 1,500 kcal): a carbohydrate-restricted diet (CRD) (%carbohydrate:fat:protein = 12:59:28) and a low-fat diet (LFD) (56:24:20) in 40 subjects with atherogenic dyslipidemia. Both interventions led to improvements in several metabolic markers, but subjects following the CRD had consistently reduced glucose (-12%) and insulin (-50%) concentrations, insulin sensitivity (-55%), weight loss (-10%), decreased adiposity (-14%), and more favorable triacylglycerol (TAG) (-51%), HDL-C (13%) and total cholesterol/HDL-C ratio (-14%) responses. In addition to these markers for MetS, the CRD subjects showed more favorable responses to alternative indicators of cardiovascular risk: postprandial lipemia (-47%), the Apo B/Apo A-1 ratio (-16%), and LDL particle distribution. Despite a threefold higher intake of dietary saturated fat during the CRD, saturated fatty acids in TAG and cholesteryl ester were significantly decreased, as was palmitoleic acid (16:1n-7), an endogenous marker of lipogenesis, compared to subjects consuming the LFD. Serum retinol binding protein 4 has been linked to insulin-resistant states, and only the CRD decreased this marker (-20%). The findings provide support for unifying the disparate markers of MetS and for the proposed intimate connection with dietary carbohydrate. The results support the use of dietary carbohydrate restriction as an effective approach to improve features of MetS and cardiovascular risk.

So you still need metformin.

No acv at night? If acv to be taken when should it be? Before dinner or before bed time?

in reply tosuramo

Yes. Still need metformin. If not for LCHF today I would be taking Vildagliptin or some other gliptin or a SGLT2 inhibitor.

Because for my BG control on just metformin is not possible without this diet

Slight increase in carbs shoots up my readings

Have tried it many times

I also take ACV at night Just before dinner

Because after dinner I take the turmeric milk

Can we take acv at bed time? What's better. Taking before dinner or at bed time ? I am waiting for my acv to arrive. I want to control my fbs 140-160. I take turmeric milk with cow ghee in the morning

in reply tosuramo

Why not interchange it?

Milk is better at night

Ragivrao in my opinion calorie  wise  consuming food  is some how benefit but it may not perfectly accurate.  You may seen athletes sportsmen and hard worker lif weighter have taken heavy food  including carb protein and fat also.

Some how  fats may not necessary to consume directly  We may by preparing breakfast add some high fat and add fatlike butter ghee to every  salads  etc

the calorie  is good for  obesity persons to decreases the wt.

In Ayurvedic system    to burn the fat  they advise to eat  ghee .  They treat Ghee as fuel if we  consume more  it burns excess of fat istored in the body .

Excess of food  whatever we may consume it became fat and triglycceroide

I am not perfect wether heart and kidney problems may used   good  fats like butter ghee  and VCO but some how some of the members opinion it is not effect the  body

But in my opinion  it is the person body resistance and his workand activity life style is required.

Similarly Carb it is main  source of food in mostly south India If we consume more it  spikes blood sugar more because carb observes body immediatly at the moment of startingeating food .

That is why for serious and coma patients the Doctor given glucosedrips immediately  and also advise  diabetes  to  brought chocolates or glucose tablets  whenever you go outside for safer  side.

My individual opinion  i fwe  consuming  food it may not digested and also not to eat food until we starbving

One thing is  I am examine myself  with glucometer reading  consuming of some less  carb bs reduces.  By this  method  I am   eat idli, dosa upama by very lowquantity with maximum of vegetavbles add   and quantity  is consuming  according to bs level. So as this way now I am reduce all tablets before consuming  .  Now Iam taken only

Glimepride 1 mg in morning and 500 mg Metformin SR at night   I am not taken  ral insulin until so far

No BP tablets taken my Bp range is also130/82

Can you please share your diet plan  and drugs if you consume ?

 Thanks for respond

I have type2 diabetes. I am 74 years old. I am on LCHF diet. 800 calories a day, for five weeks now. 3 weeks to go. I have lost 9% weight(so far), blood glucose levels down to pre diabetic levels and decreasing. I am adding more activities to my exercise regime, and I am feeling well and very cheerful. Oh yes, and I never feel hungry! No more snacks, I hardly need breakfast (but I do have some most days) I have also halved my dose of metformin, to one 500 mg a day. Also my blood pressure has come down to acceptable levels (average 128/68). This is enough proof for me to be confident that LCHF diet works, conclusively. Even the higher dose of metformin did not produce these results. And certainly my previous dietary habits, which consisted of normal amounts of bread pasta potatoes and high sugar stuff, did nothing at all for me. JanR

Thanks for  your comment posted.  As you are  at now 74 years your BP 128/68 very good health . As you are following LCHF how much fat you consumed . Weather   are you vegetarian or non vegetarian. It is difficult  to maintain  in LCHF just 800 calories   Please share your complete dialy consuming food.

Someof the members in some of previous discussion   pointed out  fat is not  good for  heart problem and aged  person and it   difficult to digest.

Please share your expereince about fat consumtion and how long you have T2  and  what is theblood sugar level recently

Please share in detail Thanks for respond

Jan.

What should be your calorie requirement as per your height, weight and physical activity level?

jan-ran profile image
jan-ran in reply tosuramo

I'm guessing, about 1300 - 1600 normally. When I was overweight I was consuming much more than that. I am moderately active, but at 74, it takes more than exercise to get the weight off! My ideal weight, which I haven't achieved yet, is about 147 lbs. I am 5' 7" tall.

suramo profile image
suramoStar in reply tojan-ran

So you are taking half the caloric requirement. Don't you get hunger pangs?

jan-ran profile image
jan-ran in reply tosuramo

No. I seem to be full up nearly all the time. It's quite weird. I think it's all the fruit and veg and salad which satisfies. 😋

We cannot wait for the authorities to show the way

I am consuming far more cals now than earlier

No increase in wt seen

But I am more alert now

Lipids under control

Surmise that BMR increases in low carb high fat consumption

I used to feel sleepy earlier on high carbs diet

Not I am more alert which even my colleague vouch for it

HI, I am not vegetarian. The diet I am following has been worked out by someone else, and it is strictly no more than 800 cal a day. I have not been tired, run down, bloated or hungry.

I can't give you exact quantities. I have stopped eating bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, pizza, cakes, biscuits, sweets etc. No more sugar. I know I can have yoghurt, butter, full milk, cream, creme fraiche, cream cheese, nuts, food cooked in olive oil, oily fish.....these are the fat type things. I also eat chicken (no skin), a little ham,  white fish, pork, lamb, prawns, smoked salmon, beef steak, eggs, cheese (cheddar and feta, ) avocado, eggs, green salad leaves, in fact all salad veg, cauliflower, green beans, sugar snap peas, celery, leeks, onion, carrots, courgettes, peppers, aubergine, mushrooms, beetroot, blueberries, apples, pears, strawberries, goji, pomegranite, lentils, all sorts of beans, chick peas (yuk),  seeds like flax......  All things in moderation, spread out through the weeks in smallish portions.

As I understand it, those fat foods which I used to dread because they would make me fat, are all ok. They are used by my body to give me energy.

I have been eating like this for 5 weeks, and already I have taken on two more dance classes, making three altogether, and I endeavour to indoor cycle the other 4 days of the week. I also have a heart problem, atrial fibrillation. This is an arrythmia, and it may be coincidental, but that too seems to have improved. I am hoping that my nafld is also going. (Non alcoholic fatty liver disease)

I have had type 2 diabetes for about 5 years. No one, (doctor or diabetes nurse)  ever suggested I should cut out carbs, or eat fat food. I found this vital information for myself, and my husband is also benefiting from it. He has lost even more weight than I have.

I did a lot of research on the internet, and came up with my perfect solution. There are people out there who know what to do, and have no commercial interest, so they tell the truth. They have done the science.

Hope this helps. JanR

Forgot to add, recent bg levels between 106 and 120, down from highs of up to 160. Most recent HbA1c, 50. Should be even better now. :)

I can't really advise, I'm not qualified to. All I can tell you is my experience, and how it works for me. I don't have your particular medical problems, and I'm sure each individual needs to tailor their requirements to suit himself, with the help of his doctor.  All I know is that the low carb high fat diet is working for me.
