New American Dietary Guidelines May Remove Limits on Cholesterol

A draft of the 2015 edition of Dietary Guidelines for Americans, created by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, now states that “cholesterol is not considered a nutrient of concern for overconsumption.”

And, according to a recent report in the Washington Post, an insider claims the new stance on cholesterol will remain in the final report. As noted by medical journalist Larry Husten: “The proposed change reflects a major shift in the scientific view of cholesterol that has taken place in recent years. Although serum cholesterol is still considered an important risk factor, cholesterol consumed in food is now thought to play a relatively insignificant role in determining blood levels of cholesterol.”

However, if you process saturated fat or cholesterol and heat it by frying, then you create very dangerous products that will clearly increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. So this new information does not give you free license to eat any type of cholesterol. Remember, trans-fats are worse than sugar for your health.

Though i knew about it a few months back,I was holding back because my own study of cholesterol and fat metabolism was not complete.i am still not clear about some technical details.

Please I draw your attention to the last para of my post,it voices certain concerns. Most of the people use oil for cooking and even cholesterol rich egg is fried,so what happens then ? At what temperature break down of saturated fat and cholesterol occurs. I am not yet clear .

This is a very high powered advisory committee who issue guide lines every 5 years. You may be correct that these may not be accepted. But traditionally committees recomendations are accepted, may be with some modifications or with some riders.

I also draw your attention to the last para of the blog. Any comments ?

For a normal person ,it doesn't matter what you eat and how much you eat. But how a person with metabolic disorders like diabetes respond ,specially if he suffers from cardiac or neurological complications, from high fat and high cholesterol diet , is not very clear. All the recomendations are for a healthy person.

I do agree that different lobbies are always at work. This time also lobbies supporting fat eg.egg lobby and others supporting low fat , low cholesterol must be active. The same time it is also true that not all are influenced by lobbies and they take balanced views.

Coming back to the current topic and taking into present day urban life style into consideration,a few things keep bothering me. Micro ovens have become inseparable part of daily life. Most of the house holds are nuclear where both husband and spouse are Woking . On holidays food is cooked and kept in frig.to be heated at the time of dinner.

If smoke point is taken at 170c for coconut oil, it will break as micro oven temp. goes above 200c. Re heating several times will push smoke point lower and lower.

So technically it is ok, but in practice, there is a big ???

Balance is not walking on a tight rope. Any diet which have all the required nutrients in required amount for optimal health and which is palatable gives satiety and fulfills our energy needs. Whichever diet qualify. I do not believe in branding any nutrient high or low.

My dictum, eat for your health and eat for pleasure. Enjoy what ever you are eating.😋

I never doubt the honesty , but are they really able to calculate the macronutrients correctly? Some are sure to do accurate calculation but I doubt about the majority.

Please note, it is not to criticise any body. Diet is always indivisual and there is no uniformity of diet. Even in our homes , we change menu on day to day basis . That is why I am skeptical.
