Fasting is not an option for diabetics on medication, because medicines do not stop working whether you are fasting or not.Risk of hypo is not to be taken lightly.

Please do not confuse intermittent fasting with fasting ,which is perceived as abstinence of food.

So,what do you advocate for people on medication such insulin? Can they fast with out any risk?

Everyday your body is fasting.

example_in the night your dinner is digested with in two hrs of the last meal. then what your stomach doing, you dont know, you can observe and listen to your heartbeating and not stomach working.

till you wake up in the morning you were fasting that is why the food taken in the morning is called Break Fast. that is breaking the fast..

Pls understand you dont have any speed control mechanism to increase or decrease the metabolic process, .God , the master designer has done that programme and the soft ware is laoded, and your hardware works accordingly.

pls read some health books which has a topic on fasting.

Can anyone explain, please what is 5:2 diet ?

If you are on diabetes medication then fasting is bad. It will cause hypo. If you are doing just diet and exercise for control, then this is fine.

I only rely on my personal experience and I am not on industrial doses.Leave alone fasting, even delayed intake of food is dangerous. My experience about your last question is they will stop medication if fasting is warranted. In my own case, when I went for colonoscopy,I did not take any breakfast nor medication.I was just taking hydrating fluids. For doing colonoscopy.the entire gut is emptied by strong doses of laxatives and no nourishment is allowed until the procedure is completed,by which time it was lunch. The doctors will give specific advise for diabetics if fasting is called for, for a particular procedure.

You are right. Each one has to take decision for himself. It is he /she who knows best about his/her body and psyche.

In each and every case Dr. Bernstein 's example is not pertinent. His diet detail is not known. He being himself a diabetic specialist can easily make adjustments in drug doses including insulin.

It is a propaganda issue that diabetic 's are eating every 3 hours. ?πŸ˜‹

I would say Dr.Bernstein is an extreme case and in 99.99 % of cases it is not applicable. His was such an extreme condition that it was do or die for him.So he went for his own solution. We can learn a lot from him but to say that he and he alone is a guiding force is not appropriate. When I started reading his book,I found that my condition has nothing in common with his condition.

Yes . It is nothing but prejudice .During sleep at night , body is designed in such a way ,that it does not require food . On the other hand food taken in the night at odd hours contributes to ill health .People on medication should not and can't go on fast .My observation is that , when one goes on fasting , when once that stipulated period by choice or by compulsion is over he or she would return to the food with vengence. Unless some thing is drastically wrong , one can't abstain from food for long . AS usual , we have to give concessions to exceptional cases like MK Gandhi , where the purpose and determination are different .

When I wrote intermittent fasting, many have given their opinion. But no one has said what they assumed to be the exact meaning of intermittent fasting.

Indiacratus, you have always advocated calorie restricted diet. It is said that the intermittent fasting gives the same health benefits as given by CR. It includes weight loss, lowering of cholesterol, triglycerides, reducing insulin resistance and preventing many chronic disease including cancer.

Intermittent fasting is A MUST to get relieved of diabetes. During fasting our body converts fat in to ketones which is a superior fuel(beta-HBA) for the brain compared to glucose.PEOPLE DOMINATED with high carb diet should first replace 50% carbohydrate with vegitable fats then reduce tablets by 50% and start intermittent fasting to get relieved of diabetes. Also during fasting Nrf2 gene pathway is activated which results in detoxification. Fasting also is a powerful stimulant for Mitochondrial growth. Our Father of Nation Gandhiji used to take intermittent fasting.

So I do.I do not require certificate for that.Let us guide people who are ignorant.Hope I am not hurting you.Thanks.

Fasting is good. But we are not experienced to it. So when we fast, sudden variation in blood glucose happens, and so it will give some difficulty. So if you reduce Carbohydrate and replace the difference with vegetable fat in your regular diet then fasting will be easier since ketones from fat is a superior energy and will not give you any withdrawal symptoms. As more and more medicines are showing failures , ultimately fasting will be considered as the best tool for removing sickness in future.

Alternately , we can try to reduce every meal so as to feel hungry after two and a half an hour. For example if one is taking 6 chapathys for breakfast and is not feeling hungry after two and a half an hour he can reduce it to 5 or 4 till he feels hungry after two and a half an hour. For each person the requirements differs. As fasting progresses the Gut bacterial colony will start relocate and more and more healthy bacterial colony will thrive and you will become more and more healthy.

By a 5:2 schedule, I presume you mean 5 days regular diet, 2 days of liquid fasting. I am currently on this schedule. On fasting days, I have water with lemon, organic broth, sometimes a glass of wine after a broth dinner. I have been able to lose weight, continue to work and study, and maintain other normal values. Does anyone know what the ADA position on this is?

Fasting is good for stomach. We muslims keep fast for a month, means during day no food or water but during night we take food and water. This gives rest to stomach and recover any damage done during heavy diet

kirubagaran profile image

Not exactly. after many centuries of consumption, observation , experimentation and experience the dietary practices were established, which is also sciencitic in approach. the only diff being no instrumental facility were avl to record and disseminate and pass the knowledge to the posterity.

diet is also a part of religion and religion is a way of life and not some dogmas.

Diabetes is prevalent in all parts of the world and all races of people and all countries , and all religions ., and all races of people, veg and non veg eaters, etc So the bottom line is it is human organs malfunction, some thing similar to vision problem in eye, although eye is there, you lose the power to see things clearly. similarly your pancreas is there ,and not dead ,it is powerless, like some ministers in govt. for eyes you wear glasses to improve your vision. for diabetes still not one monolithic solution is avl.although there is no certainty in any of the human conclusions. ,the task of enquiry is not fruitless.

As a college student how did you miss to read the life of Mahatma Gandhiji, his deodenum was in tact even after several fasting days.

recent example is Anna hazareji, who has fasted in New Delhi, the fruits of which is being enjoyed by AAP.

he is still living and ready for more fasting.

PLs try to understand the concept of UPAVASAM, meaning starving/fasting, in the name of religion God, etc during RAMZAN .

kirubagaran profile image
kirubagaran

PLs explain what is rest?is not doing any physical activity/ work is rest ?or doing it slowly is rest?

pls b informed that all of your body's internal organs is working always without rest. can heart say , I am at rest and can not work, what will happen to the poor human being, Is it bio- logical?

can information b given on the rythm concept for pancreas?
