Interaction of diabetes and psychiatric disorder is multifaceted and probably most overlooked. Some of the psychiatric disorders of particular relevance with regard to diabetes include Dilirium, Depression, Anxiety Disorders and anxiety disorders like Schizophrenia etc.

Dilirium-- in diabetes Dilirium could present either in hypo or hyper active form. The person is EXCITED and talks IRRELEVANTLY . Additionally he suffers from confusion,disorientation, hallucination and THOUGHT DISTURBANCES.

Depression -- talked many times in this forum ,an established connection with diabetes.

Anxiety disorders -- these include PANIC Disorder and OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE Disorder. Found to be three times higher in diabetics than general population.

Schizophrenia - an established relationship with diabetes.

All of the above mentioned are reflected in the writings of a very few on this forum. All these people must get themselves treated properly by endocrinologist as well as by psychiatrics. The sufferer might not know it but his near and dear ones must be very watchful,lest the sufferer may end in a mental asylum.

All the above can be happened to non diabetic also,if your A/C may be below 5.6 or so,once you are diabetic always diabetic it is better that your readings should be as close to as of non diabetic,but it does not guarantee you that you will escape the complications as compared to non diabetic,later or sooner.

Also depends to your surroundings environment,stress,family conditions,What are? your living conditions,level of health care services you enjoy.

Longevity does not depend on one factor only,multiple factors contribute to it . You can control the things which you are capable to do ,others you cannot control at all.

Even if you achieve<5 A/C you cannot escape ,the complications of diabetes,later or sooner,forget these silly studies,focus on ground zero,in and around you.

This post is about psychic disorders, which can affect a diabetic. The problem is that neither health provider nor a diabetologist is properly trained to handle these type of situations. So I wanted to initiate a

discussion on this aspect.

But the wonderfull thing is that we never discuss core of the matter. See, how things have moved from A1c to copy and paste and not a single word on the topic. It is the beauty of the forum.

Association of depression and A1c is very controversial as findings of cross sectional studies failed to be replicated in longitudinal studies.

More over it is well known that depression has a very negative impact on blood sugar control.

He was staunch follower of Mediterranean diet.

He was asked to design a ration , which should be highly nutritious and energy giving,to be carried by the soldiers in their back pack to the front line. His ration saved millions of starvation deaths during ww2. But that was before his seven states study.

By the way low fat diet recommendation was not his. It was AHA.
