My ancestors used only two or three kinds of fats, coconut oil, butter and ghee and gingelly oil for dosa and achar. None of them suffered stroke, heart attacks or took statins. They ate rice, occasionally wheat and plenty of vegetables and some fruit. There were many children and grandchildren, so the goodies needed to be shared. Now we have too much and no sharing.

No one bothered about the fats and nobody was fat. I remember the delicious Halwai oozing ghee and the chips and mixture we gobbled up with pleasure. Now we fear food and feel guilty about eating . Perhaps this also affects our metabolism.

What has the world come to? Or is it us?

Because today we have left, any kind of manual work,be it farming, agriculture, cycling, walking by feet,or others work from the childhood.During past our ancestral used to work all kind of physical work by manually, today's,the things are being done by machines, hence no physical work, resulting in accumulation of food elements in our body. These accumulated elements have altogether disturbed the metabolism of our body.No one wants to go by feet just to say one or two miles, all by auto motives, hence decaying our body system.

RkSharmaKumar: Exactly, we burn out much less! That makes a strong case for reducing carbs..

Cscon: At food courts I saw single portion having 800 - 1,200 calories! And typical snack packages 400+ calories ...Americans eat big.

Now a days Agriculture Scientific community has developed updated variety of all kinds of cereals,Proteins etc.to feed rising population, those are not perfectly suitable for human beings, birds animals,as large quantities of pesticides are used,in return they harm the metabolic system of human binges, birds, animals etc. Therefore all the eatables whether cereals,Proteins,Meat ,Polltery, fish etc. have become infected by these pesticides. We have seen during late sixty and seventy there was huge shortage of eatable cereals,Proteins,Meat ( whether it is wheat, rice or something else)peoples used to consume proportionately lesser quantity of all the three portions, hence no epidemic like situation of Diabetes population as compared to these days. Now these all the three portions are available in ab dance, hence overeating of these items resulting obese/overweight/Diabetic population. To day all the work done by machines, hence no or very little physical activities, even there is manifold increase in Automobile, hence little/or very lesser walking etc. Average life span has been increased, from 40-45years to 60-65 years in India, hence increase in old population. This result in more disease,as old persons immune system become weak as one ages,

There fore one should adopt healthily style, consuming lesser quantity of all the three portions proportionately not only carbs, but also protein and fat and work out more.

RK Sharma Kumar: Presently there seems little dispute that protein @ 0.8 gram per kilogram of body weight. [That means for me 250 calories from Protein is all that I should target. Fats @ 60% of calorie intake would come to 1,320 leaving 600 from carbohydrates) The computations in bracket bring home the point that balancing food intake requires detailed book keeping!

For vegetarians would doubling or tripling healthy fat intake make calorie targets easier?
