In my experience,nobody gives you a diet chart that you need and also acceptable to you,least of all your mom or wife who would like to load you with all kinds of goodies that are not good for a diabetic.I did my own planning by following some broad principles,like.

!.Cut down on carbohydrates like rice,wheat,potato, beet etc.You cannot avoid them totally,but you have to radically cut them down.Sweets are even more dangerous,so you have to almost totally cut them down.

2.At each meal,eat less than normal.You can eat more number of times,though.

3.You can eat more vegetables,greens,sprouts,and mushrooms that do not give you carbohydrates but lot of minerals,fiber and vitamins.

4.Do not smoke or consume alcohol.

5.If like non veg ,go for fish,and skin less chicken.Avoid red meat.

6.You can have natural food supplements like methi seeds,cinnamon,garlic,turmeric poeder,amla etc which are traditional items that are harmless.

Over all please note that more than what you eat it is how much you eat is most important.For example, a spoonful of honey occationally will be good for you but too much of it is not.

The diet plan of an individual is based on height, weight, age, sex, physical activity and the nature of diabetes. One should consider the following points while planning a diabetic diet.

* Determining energy requirements;

* Determining the type of carbohydrates , fibre and food preparations.

* Presence of any complications such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels.

In the case of Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, the energy intakeis based on needs for normal growth and development, physical activity and maintenance of desirable body weight.

In the case of Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, the majority of patients are overweight or obese, Therefore calorie restriction is required to achieve a desired weight.

You may prepare a diet plan according to your tastes and get approval from a dietitian.
