Withania somnifera, known commonly as ashwagandha, Indian ginseng, poison gooseberry, or winter cherry, is a plant in the Solanaceae or nightshade family. Several other species in the genus Withania are morphologically similar.
It is used as a herb in Ayurvedic medicine.

Root and leaves areused for medical purposes. It is used to treat erectile dysfunction, rheumatism and skin disorders. It is known as amakkuram in malayalam amakkura kizhangu in tamil, Aswagandha, thuragagandha, vagigandha, hayagandha, varaha, varada kushtagandhini in sanskrit. It is cultivated in Panjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra.

Mr.Nair,Please see the the link below.I remember a drug called 'reserpine' was isolated for treating high BP, I think by Parke Davis and it was declared as an adaptation from ayurveda. Name of the plant as I remember was Rauwolfia serpentina also known as sarpagandha This was sometime when I was in my teens.Just verifying. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rauwolfia_serpentina
I think I have confused the issue.The question is about aswagandha and I mistook it for sarpagandha. My error.
Both are different medicinal plants. Aswagandh is not Rauwolfia serpentina> If you crush the root of Aswagandh, you will feel the smell (gandh) of the horse (Aswa). Hence the name derived as Aswagandh.

What is still pending as per the original enquiry is weather ashwagandha or ginseng (as it is known in Korea) is helpful in controlling Diabetes.... The thread has gone to a different angle . Kindly suggest or comment if Ashwagandha / Ginseng is helpful in controlling Diabetes. Any experiences or research on this ?

useful in controlling high bp . look it is mainly contained in divya mukta vati (Ramdev-BP ayurvedic medicine ) generally high bp patients become diabetics later on ,so may be useful in diabetes .
