Even if you take ayurvedic medicines for the treatment of diabetes mellitus, you should undergo the following medical tests periodically. You should not neglect the importance of diet and exercise in controlling the diabetes. Stress management is also important.

A: HbA1c. HbA1c is a lab test that shows the average level of blood sugar (glucose) over the previous 3 months. It shows how well you are controlling your diabetes.

B: Control your high Blood pressure, if any. Normal blood pressure- <120/80 mmHg.

C: Control your blood Cholesterol: Normal cholesterol < 200 mg/dL. LDL <100 mg/dL HDL > 40 mg/dL Triglyceride < 150 mg/dL.

D: Diabetic education. Dental check-up should be done in every six months.

E: Eye examination for glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and cataract.

F: Foot examination (Diabetic neuropathy and diabetic foot ulcers)

G: Glucose monitoring. Fasting or postprandial blood sugar may be checked daily and avoid foods that elevate blood sugar.

H: Health maintenance immunization against influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia.

I: Indications for specialty care. Heart, kidney and liver should be checked periodically by concerned specialists.(Once in a year).

* Overall, the risk for death among people with diabetes is about twice that of people of similar age without diabetes.

* Adults with diabetes have heart disease death rates about 2 to 4 times higher than adults without diabetes.

* The risk for stroke is 2 to 4 times higher among people with diabetes.

Linopride is a combination of two drugs viz., Glimepiride and metformin.

Glimepiride is used along with diet and exercise, and sometimes with other medications, to treat type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and, therefore, cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood). Glimepiride lowers blood sugar by causing the pancreas to produce insulin (a natural substance that is needed to break down sugar in the body) and helping the body use insulin efficiently. This medication will only help lower blood sugar in people whose bodies produce insulin naturally.

Side effects from taking glimepiride include gastrointestinal tract (GI) disturbance, and rarely thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, hemolytic anemia, and occasionally allergic reactions occur. In the initial weeks of treatment, the risk of hypoglycemia may be increased. Alcohol consumption and exposure to sunlight should be restricted in patients taking it because they can worsen the side effects.

Metformin is used alone or with other medications, including insulin, to treat type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and, therefore, cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood). Metformin is in a class of drugs called biguanides. Metformin helps to control the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood. It decreases the amount of glucose you absorb from your food and the amount of glucose made by your liver. Metformin also increases your body's response to insulin, a natural substance that controls the amount of glucose in the blood.

The most common adverse effect of metformin is gastrointestinal upset, including diarrhea, cramps, nausea, vomiting and increased flatulence; metformin is more commonly associated with gastrointestinal side effects than most other antidiabetic drugs. The most serious potential side effect of metformin use is lactic acidosis; this complication is very rare, and the vast majority of these cases seem to be related to comorbid conditions, such as impaired liver or kidney function, rather than to the metformin itself.

Metformin has also been reported to decrease the blood levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone in people with hypothyroidism, and, in men, testosterone. The clinical significance of these changes is still unknown.
