Another Q About B Vitamins

I have been trying to follow and understand the previous posts on here regarding levels of Vitamins B6 and B2 and their interactions, particularly the conversations around B6 toxicity. I recently had a test done by way of Genova Nutritional Assessment (not LabCorp) and my B6-Pyridoxine levels were very low and my B2-Riboflavin levels were very high. What I think that shows is that B6 toxicity does not appear to be a problem and I should simply supplement B6? Am I missing something?

(Thank you for all this biochemistry guidance, btw! None of my doctors seem to be as helpful as you guys ...)

It sounds like you’re on the right track with your understanding of your B6 levels. Given that your B6-Pyridoxine levels are low, supplementing with pyridoxine might seem beneficial, but I recommend considering P5P (pyridoxal 5’-phosphate) instead.

P5P is the active form of vitamin B6, meaning your body can use it immediately without needing to convert it. This can be particularly helpful if your body has difficulty with that conversion. Additionally, P5P may have a lower risk of toxicity compared to high doses of pyridoxine.

It is well established that high doses of pyridoxine are toxic and should be avoided. Medical references can be found here: healthunlocked.com/cure-par...

As far as I know there is no evidence of toxicity due to P5P. It is the version of B6 to be used for supplementation.

Yes, that's correct, PB. I would avoid even low dosages of pyridoxine, as it can compete with and inhibit the function of P5P, which may lead to symptoms resembling a vitamin B6 deficiency, despite supplementation.

❗Be cautious, as the numerous additional sources of pyridoxine in food and various supplements can make you unknowingly susceptible to this issue, as I have personally experienced. Check this thoroughly!
