Measuring Betaine, Cinnamon, Licorice, Nigella Sativa, and PEA: TSPs to Grams

So I decided to get my scale out amazon.com/gp/product/B01HC... and document exactly what I am getting in my scoops of some supplements. I want to start fine tuning so I need some accuracy.

Betaine (TMG) (my newest supplement): amazon.com/dp/B00GW6T0O8?ps... 1 TSP = 3.3 grams.

Ceylon Cinnamon: amazon.com/gp/product/B07K7... 1 TSP = 2.2 grams.

Licorice Root Extract: amazon.com/gp/product/B079N... 1/4 TSP = 600 mg.

Nigella Sativa (I grind the seeds): amazon.com/gp/product/B00L2... 1 TSP = 2.5 grams.

um Palmitoylethanolamide: amazon.com/gp/product/B07NJ... 1/2 TSP = 600 mg.

Hey Bolt -- I just had delivered to my door 500 grams of thiamine (Vit B1). I needed to calculate what fraction of a teaspoon is 250mg of thiamine. I used the same conversion weight you mentioned for Ceylon cinnamon (approx. 2260mg) for one teaspoon. I plan to take 250mg at breakfast and a second dose at lunch. so I should be OK with 1/8 tsp as a measure, correct? Thanx mate --- you're a legend! Alan

I think you should get a cheap scale (I linked to one) and verify the weight. You can see I measured 3 different things at a tsp and they all measured different weights.

Not all teaspoons are accurate/equal. Your teaspoon or measuring scoop may differ from others. Also, the weight of different substances can vary quite a bit. It might be good to recommend that everyone invest $20 or so into a jeweler’s scale for accurate measuring. The abbreviation for teaspoon should not be capitalized.

Thanks Julie, I was pretty sure I should not have been capitalizing tsp :)

I think all quality measuring spoons should be the same. I should have mentioned "level". These are the ones I use: Measuring Spoons Stainless steel Small Tablespoon Accurate Kitchen Measuring Spoons 1/2 Tablespoon and 1/8 Teaspoon Metal Measuring Spoon for Dry and Liquid Ingredients, Set of 6. amazon.com/gp/product/B074P...

I also agree weights of substances vary. I did not call this out, but I intentionally linked to the exact products I was weighing. I am also sure different batches could vary, so maybe re-calibrate with every batch.

A few years ago in the Neuro Talk forum I made a post about the importance of having accurately measured doses and I carried out some experiments by weighing my drugs.

"Over the years a number of people have posted saying that their drugs have suddenly become less effective. Sometimes this has been linked to a move to generics. The suspicion has been that quality control has not been good enough.

I suspect that the effect of taking levodopa based drugs is especially affected by variations, both high or low, in the actual doses of the active component drugs. This could show itself in not crossing the "on"/"off" threshold or in increased dyskinesia. It could also be noticed in term of a dose wearing off earlier. On a three hour drug cycle a 5% lower dose would finish about 10 minutes earlier."

I read an article and it was cheap. Here is my post on it: Betaine: Evaluation of Antioxidant and Anti Parkinsonism Activity of Betaine in Experimental Rats healthunlocked.com/cure-par...

At some point it becomes pedantic. At STP (Standardized Temp and Pressure) one tsp equals 5ml or 5 cc. One TBS equals 15ml or 15cc. But tsp is a volume measurement, not weight. A course powder of 5ml will weigh less than a fine powder. I use Ozone. At gram or mg dosage ozone is a toxin. But at microgram dosage it's an immuno-stimulant.
