Hi Everyone,

We are Kinnections. We are a group of Rice University Students who released this DIY Open Source Glove backed by research from Stanford(pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articl... for patients to use and recreate while waiting for the FDA approved glove : oedk.wildapricot.org/Treatm...

We've gotten a lot of traction over the past couple of months and received tons of requests to have gloves potentially available for people to easily obtain without having to DIY one. We've made an initial interest form on our website to gauge how many gloves to make available in our first batch of orders which we hope to release by the end of this year. Our focus is on getting as many people a set of working gloves as possible!

Please note: this form is completely risk free! No payment required today and only to gauge demand!

Fill it out here : kinnections.foundation/

Let us know if you have any questions, comments, feedback or suggestions.

Best,

Kinnections

Is it similar to pater tass glove

Kinnections profile image
Kinnections in reply toFarooqji

Yes, the glove was inspired by Dr Tass and his research.

How much is the expected price

Kinnections profile image
Kinnections in reply toFarooqji

Hi! The current estimate is about $250 excluding shipping costs. We do plan on offering sliding scales for people who are unable to achieve this!

Sounds great! Thank you for doing this!

Is the glove controlled by 2 separate processors and two separate batteries (power pack) synchronized by Bluetooth?

Kinnections profile image
Kinnections in reply tostlewy

Yes the gloves are synchronized wirelessly with <10ms delay between them. Two separate control units and batteries will be included in a kit.

So this will be a kit that will need to be assembled by the buyer? Also, do the microprocessors come with the algorithm pre-installed? I ask because I made a pair of gloves following the PDBuzzboard design where I got all the info from his GetHub site but struggled with loading the sketch.

Thank you, Craig

Kinnections profile image
Kinnections in reply tobrauncs

Hi, yes all the algorithms would come pre-installed! The kit is designed to be plug and play, no hardware tools, software tools or technical experience required. We decided on a kit so that users have to ability to customize/modify based on personal preference, which fits our initial mission to have this be an open source solution.

I don't understand how the glove can be customized and how a user would know how to do this. Can you explain? Also, is it possible to see a video of the glove and how to set it up and use it?

Hi Craig, I think I might be able to help you get your PDBuzzboard gloves working. Contact me through chat if you would like me to help you troubleshoot your build.

Thanks for your kind offer but I was able to program my gloves with the generous help of another pwp on this blog. I used them for three months and the first thing I noticed was my sense of smell really improved. After that I noticed my strength and coordination and my dystonia improved which was great but after 3+ months it seemed as f I had plateaued so I stopped using them. Also, I had a had a hard time coordinating my C/L use while using the gloves regularly and it was making it difficult to predict my on/off timing.

At the same time I was starting to experience short stepping and gait freeze but my gloves didn't help with that. I'm willing to try a different pair of gloves but for now I am using a small TENS unit that mimics the BeechBand to help with my gait problems.

Cheers, Craig

Hi,Which TENS? How many channels does it have? What is the stimulation you use, 70 bpm?

brauncs profile image
brauncs in reply toJayPwP

It's a Belifu Model #SM9126 that I got a few years back on Amazon. I think it was about $30. It's got 6 channels and each channel has 4 modes. When I was checking out the modes I found that in Main mode 1, setting # 3 (Crosscut fist kneading(EMS) was like a tapping sensation so I stuck two small pads on my arm and connected 1 wire, with 2 electrode connectors, to them and I can adjust the intensity of the taps, that are factory set at about 75 BPM. The trick, as Carl Beech explains on his website, is to have it tapping but not concentrate on the tapping, So it's not as automatic as is seen in some of his amazing videos, but it seems to help me with my short stepping ang gait freeze. The only downside is it will only run for a maximum of 1 hour without you having to reset the time in ten minute increments. I put it on when I feel an off time coming and then turn it off when I'm on. I bought a wrist wallet and put it in that and keep the connections in place with enough coban to hold it in place. Like I said, the trick is to be able to have it at an intensity where you can feel it but forget about it, or it doesn't work. Since I took this photo I put the electrodes further up on my forearm and keep them in place with a wrap of coban. If you try this please let me know how it works for you👍

Cheers, Craig

Which glove are you using?

brauncs profile image
brauncs in reply toJulia5440

Hi Julia, this is not a VibroTactile device (glove). This is an experiment that I did with a TENS unit I had to mimic the tapping effect of the BeechBand that was developed by Carl Beech and a friend of his that has helped some PWP in the UK with gait issues amongst other symptoms. I would call it a Metronome device.

Cheers, Craig

Internationally available?

Yes, The Glove can be shipped internationally!

JayPwP profile image
JayPwP in reply toKinnections

Thank you.

Just one more question,

Would it have multiple stimulation patterns? For example, 1 Tass pattern and 1 random pattern?

JayPwP profile image
JayPwP in reply toJayPwP

Kinnections ???

Kinnections profile image
Kinnections in reply toJayPwP

Hi,

The Gloves will have default preset vibrations such as the VCR and Noisy VCR documented and implented by Dr Tass. However, we are in the process of implementing a feature where vibrations can be fully customized by the user!

Thank you for your question! Feel free to suggest any other features you think may be helpful!

I clicked on the link to the Wild Apricot page and it said:

SKILLS NEEDED:

We recommend soldering, 3D printing with PLA, and mild sewing. But, the soldering joints are simple, the 3D printed parts can be ordered, and can alternatively use a stapler or fashion tape for sewing.

This sounds complicated to assemble.

Have any trials been completed with your glove to clarify whether it leads to positive outcomes?

Julia5440 profile image
Julia5440 in reply toJulia5440

...even informal trials by a few individuals with PD?

JayPwP profile image
JayPwP in reply toJulia5440

These gloves use the Tass stimulation which has shown positive outcomes with PD. This gloves team has not devised or invented anything.

Julia5440 profile image
Julia5440 in reply toJayPwP

Thanks! So you are saying that they are identical in design and function to the gloves being used in the clinical trials?

JayPwP profile image
JayPwP in reply toJulia5440

Exact replica in function I believe, but way more compact and portable in design.

Actual efficacy can only be confirmed after using the gloves.
