Keto & fasting for PD neuro protection. How does one combine this with medication times and management?

Intermittent fasting is believed to be neuro protective as is keto.

My question is for those who have done or are doing fasting and or keto. How do you do it with your medications? Meds on an empty stomach? Does that include Ambroxol on an empty stomach?

For those seeking more info on keto and fasting in general, I recommend Dale Bredeson and David Perlmutter. For Keto basics, Dr. Boz on YouTube is good.

I’m wondering the same about fasting

I just read that fasting where you eat in a window of time is just as efficient as the intermittent fasting. Because I was thinking the exact same thing: how in the heck do you take pills on an empty stomach like that? I can’t remember where I saw it; sorry. I was looking at NIH studies on fasting and somewhere in there was some thing about the “window eating.” Meaning you eat breakfast at say 7 AM and then dinner at three or 4, then nothing after that. So your body is in fasting mode until the next morning. I hope I didn’t just carefully explain some thing you already know about LOL. I wasn’t sure so hence the long explanation.😂

I just started doing the type of intermittent fasting where you confine your eating to an eight hour window per day. My initial reaction is that my digestion is better under this regimen. As far as the keto diet goes, while not on that diet myself, I do notice that carbidopa levodopa is definitely interfered when protein is ingested within one hour before taking the medication or two hours after. I started consuming more carbohydrates, just to have something to eat doesn’t interfere with my medication.. I maintained a fairly strict keto diet before I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. I have found it hard to maintain since then. I wonder if that could also have something to do withChanging perceptions of taste and texture related to the disease.

Hi, I intermittent fast and I am on the Wahl’s/Keto diet. I eat breakfast/lunch about 12 to 1 and dinner around 6. I take meds at 10, 2, 8 and midnight. This spaces my meds away from any protein intake and suits my lifestyle. I feel the diet is here to stay. My strange neuropathy is gone and my energy throughout the day is better than ever. For those 2 reasons, I would not go back to my old ways. Cheers and good luck!

I do almost exactly the same thing, except I have layered the Specific Carbohydrate Diet on top of Wahls Paleo Plus. Food has to allowed on both diets or I skip it. SCD focuses on only eating food where the molecule is easily digested so the food does not sit in our gut feeding bad bacteria. breakingtheviciouscycle.info/

Thanks for the reply. I looked up SCD, really interesting. I definitely think a combination of ideas will be closer to the answer.

I've not read anywhere that SCD is good for PK, but when you see that PK patients have dysbiosis and that the SCD normalizes the microbiome, it just makes sense.

I recommend making sure you have resistant starches that make it to the colon intact; asparagus, leeks, cabbage are examples. Opposite of fast digestion so they feed colon bacteria

I checked. asparagus, leeks, cabbage are all on the approved SCD list:

So interesting! Abs surprising. I need to study the list. I had not heart of this protocol, list. Thank you for sharing it.

Echoing what Palm Springs said, I just keep C/L a good hour away from protein intake and don’t worry about the rest. I/F doesn’t seem to interfere with C/L medication. Also, like Palm Springs, I have way more energy on the Keto Diet and am not considering going back to carbs.

I’m getting there- and eliminated my morning Sinemet while exercising in a fasted state, thinking clearly and with motivation. Bulletproof type of coffee ☕️ is helpful!

Amy, sounds encouraging! Are you in the intermittent fasting mode or doing keto or both? If you can give few details about your diet and how long did it take to drop your morning sinemet will be great. Thanks

@Lana666 IF only. I probably hit a keto state before breaking my fast. It felt great within the first weeks when I tapered off my morning Sinemet. My Neuro does not object, so I’m even more confident about this pattern.

What form of bulletproof coffee are you doing? I have been trying different ways. Coffee with ghee is not to my liking but the ghee is great for butyrate production and should not knock you out of ketosis.

I take one Rytary with black coffee at 7AM. Then spent 2-3 hours on my treadmill. Then I take the second Rytary at 2PM. An hour later I have my first meal of the day. Then dinner at 10PM and take the third Rytary at 11PM.

in reply tokaypeeoh

Dinner at 10 pm? What is your sleep schedule? Hope you don’t mind my saying but eating close to when you are going to sleep is bad for digestion and bad for brain repair.

I've been doing IF for a couple of years - lunch at about 2-3 pm, dinner about 7-8 pm. I exercise while fasted. Two days ago I started on Sinemet which I'm taking at 6 am, 12 noon (so those two on an empty stomach) and 6pm. The only side effect so far has been a dry mouth first thing in the morning.

I would like to have your fasting schedule but I need to drink coffee in the AM and matcha. Are you drinking coffee black? No coffee?

Pull up the video on YT by Dr. Ken D Berry MD called Fasting Doesn’t Help Weight Loss He debunks a study against fasting that was paid for by the food industry.
