Hey all. Most of you understand that coconut oil generates ketones in the brain. Fasting and Keto diet generates more but both are hard work. MCT oil offers a few more ketones than CO but Ketone ester has just been made available for purchase. This is a distilled essence of the powerful property that generates the key tones for those of you that wish to try it. You’d have to ingest a bucketload of CO to march it. Bit pricey as it’s new but worth exploring🤔

Go get your ketones!

Hiya Jeeves,
Sorry for my ignorance, but what is MCT oil?
I'm a little confused, too many ketones can cause ketoacidosis, which is not good for you. How do you know when you've gone too far?
Good question LagLag. Got me thinking and then researching. Ketoacidosis develops in response to lack of insulin and thus 99% of people who get this are diabetics. It's the lack of insulin that causes this condition as it assures a chemical balance. Apparently it's a long way from nutritional ketosis and I'm not sure that a non-diabetic CAN get this illness. Satwar would have a better answer but I haven't seen him/her around for a long time. Satwar has been in ketosis for years now I think. The great authority on all of this is a guy called Professor (or Dr) Veech and he discusses all thing ketoney in various clips on YouTube. I think it's him that created the ester.
I hope this explains:

Thanks, that helped. I guess if you're going to go on a keto diet, it might be a good idea to check your keytones every once in awhile just to get an idea of where they are, even though they are much higher in ketoacidosis. When I first heard about raising your keytones I always wondered about how that would be safe because I had a diabetic Doberman that I had to give 2 shots a day & every once in awhile I had to check her ketones to make sure they weren't too high.
Definitely, I consider it essential when first starting out, to monitor ketones in your blood. They can be very expensive, though, in some parts of the world. After a while you can tell if your ketones are adequate by a return of your symptoms. That’s where a scoop of ketone salts can be helpful for a quick boost of ketones in your blood.
I try to maintain ketones through diet, which includes 8 tbs of MCT oil daily (4 * 2 tbs). I find a good nights sleep helps elevate ketones when you wake up. It’s a good way to start the day.
I'm on a full time Ketogenic diet. Low carbs, high fat. Coconut oil is just part of it. Was part of a dietary trial and there were good results for Keto at the end of it.
How much coconut oil do you end up taking a day?
Anywhere from 3-6 tablespoons a day. I put 2.5 tablespoons into cocao drink (with cream), or into a smoothie. Seems weird - drinking oil - but you get used to it!
If you want to understand the keto diet, read the faq on reddit/r/keto. Basically, if you don't use up the glucose in your system, your body will not be able to use the ketones from MCT and others sources. Your body will also need a period of time to adapt to using ketones.
A few questions. : i am on a keto diet for some time. Trying to do the Terry Wahls paleo plus. I check if I am in ketosis by using ketosticks ( you check the urin) that is much cheaper than to check your blood ketones. Why is it necessary to check blood ketones? By the way I always stay in very mild ketosis because I eat a lot of vegetables and they contain carbs as well. Very difficult to get into the dark side of ketosis. Perhaps if you fast for a long time. Also watch William Curtis . He has got park and uses ketones to have less symptoms
There’s a new ketone test unit called a Mojo Keto. It’s main quality is that it’s test strips are about 99 cents each which is a considerable saving compared to other meters on the market .
I believe that the uRine sticks can give a false reading. Message Satwar above. He’ll explain accurately
I also follow a keto diet to control my parkinson's. I use MCT oil, about 6 tbs a day, but I also keep my protein moderate and my carbs very low, under 30g a day, all green veggies plus tbs mannitol (another thread!).
BTW, MCT oil's not exactly man made--it's purified from coconut or palm oil. It's the fraction that specifically helps get you into ketosis. Kind of like the difference between that giant inexpensive bottle of fish oil or high priced distilled omega 3 EPA and DHA capsules :o)
But I want to know more about the ketone esters. Are they a powder? Liquid? I've heard they taste horrible. True? False? Have you tested your blood (urine/breath) to see how well they work? I've read they give more of an instant boost, where MCT gives more of an all day high...but I don't know if that's true.
thx!
Sounds about right I’d say but no I haven’t tried the ester. I came across it the other night when watching Bill Curtis on YouTube. It’s great news but sadly the CO didn’t really do much for me. Maybe I wasn’t I’ll enough 2 years ago? They say it works best for those with worse PD.
Yeah... no, I wouldn't expect CO to do all that much. I think you have to invest in the MCT if you really want the ketone boost. And also, IMHO, it's not like you can eat a regular diet and just swallow a little MCT either. You still have to watch your carbs and protein. I eat about 75-80% fat.
Where did you read that about advanced PD? I would think EVERYTHING works better the earlier you catch it. I am very early--or at least, I started this diet right away. I still don't take any meds.
The thing is, if you are very early, you might not see a difference, because (if it is working) you are simply not getting worse and that's hard to measure. But that's what you want, isn't it? To protect your dopamine neurons while you still have a lot and stop/slow the process at an early stage?
Well I went ketogenic for a period of about six weeks when first dxed. Just didn’t feel any better in any way really. And despite all the exercise etc have had a steady worsening of symptoms. Having said that, I consider myself a reasonably mild case so far. Bill Curtis put it into my head that it had morr effect on advanced cases. He replied to my comment on YouTube .
