I had a colonoscopy 5 years ago due to blood in my stools, I was given suppositories and it cleared up and I've thought nothing of it until it started again 2 months ago. My latest colonoscopy showed proctitis and an ulcer, I'm taking mesalazine suppositories which stopped the bleeding, I was taking 2 before bed but after a few hours I had to go to the toilet. My problem is my body keeps pushing as if it needs to get everything out. This happens 3-4 times within an hour after my first loo visit. I had an appointment with the ibd clinic and was told I could split them through the day. This made it worse and I got really bad piles. I'm now going back to 2 before bed. I'm just putting up with the 1am toilet visits and uncontrollable pushing. I was wondering if this is a normal reaction to the meds. I started bleeding again (a very tiny bit) when I split the tablets, my bum never got a rest, hoping it will ease now.

I don't know really what to ask as its early on in my treatment, I'm kinda at the mercy of my doctor and the clinic. I came mainly to see if there were similarities to my situation and to get helpful information.

Thanks

hello Moogy675 I’m really sorry you’re experiencing these problems with mesalazine I have this medication but it doesn’t cause me any issues maybe because I only take one suppository I’m not sure but I think it’s also available to take in a different format that you swallow perhaps someone on the forum knows if that’s correct but definitely ring your ibd clinic for assistance in managing your treatment 🤍

Thanks for the reply, I'm going to email them on Monday, unfortunately you can't ring and speak to anyone it's just an answering machine. I've been taking them for 5 weeks and still bleeding.

In my experience the pushing urge is normal with proctitis as the inflammation can make you constantly feel like you need to expel something. When you then take the suppositories the feeling gets worse. When your proctitis is bad it's normal to struggle to retain them. I always found it best to take them before bed when I was most sleepy so I could try and fall asleep before I felt the urge to go to the loo. Taking two at once will also make the feeling worse. In terms of the discomfort using them do you wet them before inserting them? This can make it easier and less likely to cause irritation.
