Losing blood, mucus & clots very scared

A few days ago (Saturday 25th of November) I got very unwell with severe stomach, cramps, diarrhoea, weakness and hot sweats. I had to take all of my clothes off and lie on the bathroom floor and had diarrhoea for around three hours (this has happened to me in the past with no answers other than that I have IBS)

However, unlike previous times where I’ve experienced this, at around 3 am this turned to only blood & mucus with no stools. On Sunday I went to the toilet around 11 times and every time it was just blood and mucus no stool. I went to the doctors on Monday and was told it was probably diverticulitis but had no tests performed. My mother has very aggressive, ulcerative colitis, and I mentioned this to the doctor.

I feel very nauseous and unable to eat. I’ve got low stomach cramps and low back pain and yesterday I passed quite a large clot (shown on the toilet paper in my photos) which really scared me.

I have another telephone appointment with a different doctor today but I have severe anxiety and I’m really struggling. I will attach some photos. I’m really sorry to be so graphic but I’m very scared at this point

Today I feel quite weak, nauseas, still cramping but don’t seem to be going to the toilet even though I feel like I have urgency to do so I’m scared every time I go to the toilet as I’m scared about losing more blood

My mum thinks I may have colitis like herself, but the fear of not knowing is scaring me in case something sinister is going on. Do these photos look like flareups anyone else has had? I will push for tests when I speak to the doctor

Why not go to A&E and get yourself checked out, this is not normal at all.

Thank you for your reply. I have severe anxiety and agoraphobia which makes it hard to leave my house so A&E would be incredibly difficult for me. However if it continues this way I will have to go. I spoke to the doctor yesterday and have submitted some stool samples today. I have also started to pass stools again. There is still blood. However, it seems to be a little less. I will await the stool sample results, and in the meantime, if the bleeding got worse again, I’d have to think about A&E

My mum has very aggressive, ulcerative, colitis and passes a lot more blood than this on a daily basis, however she is obviously diagnosed whereas I am not so it’s scary not knowing what’s going on in my case.

Thank you again for your reply

You have classic Colitis symptoms and with the family history, I would expect a doctor to pick this up. Blood is a significant red flag so when you speak to the GP today, emphasise that plus pain, nausea, etc. If you don't get anywhere, A&E is the place to go. Hope you get some help today.

Take a stool sample in to your GP. I've had similar symptoms for 2 months even though I have diagnosed crohn's colitis for years and on biological infusions.

I've had an xray and they said I was constipated and impacted and this was overflow diarrhoea and blood from piles?

I'm now going for a sigmoidoscopy tomorrow as it hasn't stopped. The waiting list for an urgent was 2 months.

I was advised to keep my fluid up 8 glasses and eat plenty of fibre ie weetabix, wholemeal etc

Then I was given laxido as well.

Good luck and persevere with your GP.

Ps I on a research study of genetics and family history of IBD it won't help me, but may help future generations.

Thank you so much for your reply. I really appreciate it. I’m sorry that you’ve been dealing with similar issues. It’s very scary.

I spoke to my doctor yesterday and have sent stool samples off today which I’m happy to have had. I am passing stools now along with the blood, but I’d say the bleeding has got a little less. I will await the stool sample results and see if the bleeding continues to get better.

I was also given laxido and I managed to eat a tiny bit of broth yesterday which is positive.

Hi

I am so sorry for you. You need to get this checked out. I have ulcerative colitis and passed blood and mucus but nothing like you . You need to see someone. If you don’t get any joy with your GP then take your photos and go to A&E. Someone will be able to put your mind at rest. Best wishes

thank you so much for your reply I spoke to my GP yesterday and have sent off stool samples today, which I am happy to have had done. I’ve started passing some stools now. There is still blood but it seems to be a little less than prior. I will await the stool sample results and take it from there. I have very severe anxiety and agoraphobia which makes leaving the house very difficult so A&E would be incredibly hard for me. However obviously if the bleeding continued more severely I would have to go.

My mum has very aggressive, ulcerative colitis and passes a lot more blood than this every single day. However, she is obviously diagnosed , whereas it’s quite scary not knowing exactly what’s going on in my case.

thank you again for your reply

Hi there, hope you are feeling better. Have you had the results of your stool sample yet? Did you have any blood tests or been referred to see a specialist? My blood test was just showed non specific inflammation, which could have been anything, and my calprotectin wasn’t particularly high. The presence of blood in the stool (microscopic at the time) triggered a colonoscopy and I was diagnosed with UC aged 60. I had been told all my life it was just IBS! It must be incredibly hard for you given your anxiety but push for proper assessment and treatment and this will in turn lessen your anxiety. I found learning more about the link between the gut and the brain has really helped. I hope you get sorted soon. Good luck.

I know it’s an old post but this looks like Ulcerative Colitis.

I’ve had the same blood coming out. Exactly how your photos show.

It’s hard getting used to but with the right treatment and diet. You can achieve remission. This will take time.

I also suffer from severe anxiety and panic attacks.

What you can do is meditate and exercise. It will help both your Ulcerative Colitis and anxiety,

Diet plays a role in both as well.

I hope you and your gi find the right medication for you.

Best wishes.
