Sodium Butyrate is healing me!

I’ve suffered with IBD for 24 years and at last I have my symptoms under control, in fact I am recovering. After such a long time it is life changing for me. My recovery started with eating LoFodmap foods which gave my digestion a much needed rest, then after considerable research I stumbled across Sodium Butyrate which has been a game changer. I urge anyone reading this who has colon inflammation to give it a try as I can now eat whatever I fancy including high fibre foods and fruit which were a no no before. My doctor has reduced my medication and I am hoping for complete remission at my next colonoscopy. The results of SB speak for themselves 😉 and this has been the best Christmas present I could have ever wished for. Two months ago I was facing the prospect of having to start taking biologics as I was so poorly and steroidal treatment had ceased to work and now I just feel like a normal, healthy happy person 😀

Sodium Butyrate are short chain fatty acids which are the chosen food of coloncytes, the cells that line the colon. Early studies have shown that they can reduce inflammation and heal the mucosal lining in time. They even have the capacity of killing off pre cancer cells. It is given to patients recovering from bowel surgery.

I hope this post will help anyone with Ulcerative Colitis or Crohns and I wish you all well x

Thanks for sharing your experience with butyrate. I'm also taking butyrate, not sodium butyrate, but tributyrin which is essentially the same thing and I think it's great for the gut microbiota and digestion support. I'm also suffering from UC and I managed to get it under control by taking different supplements, butyrate being one of the most important. All the best!

That’s interesting to hear, thank you for replying and taking the time to read my story! I felt compelled to post as I think it could help a lot of people! I also have a tsp of manuka honey first thing as it’s anti inflammatory and probiotics. That’s brilliant you’ve also got your UC under control. I firmly believe diet has a big part to play. Happy New Year!

I'm taking curcumin extract and omega 3 with high does of EPA as they are anti inflammatory, along with probiotics and digestive enzymes.Didn't know about the manuka honey, might give that a go. Happy New Year and all the best!

Hi rg1987Thanks for sharing your experience. I have been a UC sufferer for 50 years and although fairly well controlled I do get some off days, but having had it for so long it's my 'normal' and I have got used to it.

What I would be really interested to know is what doseage of Sodium Butyrate you take and if possible is there a specific brand you could recommend.

Thanks.

Hi there, I take a high dosage at the moment as I have only been taking it for a couple of months so I take 3.6g a day which is 2 tablets with each main meal. I get mine from Bodybio which a good reputable supplier. I started with 2 tablets a day and increased slowly to be on the safe side. It’s not possible to take too much so don’t worry that the tub says 2 tablets a day! A study was done on UC patients and they were given 4g a day so that was how I came to that dosage, The vast majority of participants had improved symptoms and several achieved complete remission. I know what you mean about getting used to living with it, which is why it feels like a miracle to me that I am now functioning normally! I do hope it works for you, I will keep my fingers crossed. I’d love to hear how you get on.

Hello. I have just ordered sb from bodybio and I can’t wait to try it. I am a UC sufferer currently on steroids. It does say to increase the dose slowly as it can cause bloating and wind. I don’t want anymore of that.

Hello Idalmis that’s great to hear you’re going to give SB a try. I started on 2 tablets a day, one with breakfast and one with my evening meal and then increased by one every few days until I got to six which is 3.6g…ie 2 tablets in the morning. 2 at lunchtime and 2 in the evening with food each time. I didn’t have any problems at all so I hope that it will be the same for you too! You may find you don’t need as many as everyone is different and I may well find at some point in the future that I will not need so much, it’s all a bit of a learning curve at the moment! Best of luck with it, can you let me know how you get on? It may take a couple of weeks to work so persevere!

Hello again. How are you? I hope you are still keeping well. I am but the benefits on my constipation is slowing down. I emailed bodybio about increasing the dosage but they do not give any advice. I read that you take 6 a day safely. Have you noticed a reduced appetite? I have and I am pleased as I am. Joining slimming world today to lose lbs 8 before my holiday in June.

Hello Idalmis nice to hear from you, I’m very well thank you…still improving so I am overjoyed still! I have noticed that if I eat too much sugar that does have a detrimental effect so am being careful not to ruin things. Yes I most definitely have a reduced appetite which is a very nice side effect of SB. I wish you well with your weight loss plans. I do still take 6 capsules because I am too wary to reduce as they have changed my life so significantly I don’t want to go back to how I was. You could look up foods that naturally create SB in your system as a way of getting more in your diet? Might be an idea? I wish I knew more about it but trials are still in the early stages and not a lot is known which is why Bodybio may not be able to help. Maybe up your dosage and just see if that helps?

Hello again,I wanted to report back on sodium burytate. So I have been taking 4 tablets a day for 2 weeks now and I can say my blood, piles and constipation have gone. I was told to stop steroids and decrease Pentasa as there was no inflammation of UC. I am going to buy another bottle but see if I can manage 2 tablets instead of 4 as it can get expensive. Thank you for sharing your story.

Thanks for sharing tis very interesting health tip ..I also had terrible biologics and latent TB treatment exp , they made me weak and side effects such as nausea, diahhrea, bleeding etc I stop when my liver elevation reached almost a thousand. Now recovering. Do you think I can consume SB without doc prescription? only worry SB may have liver toxicity , can’t afford to hurt my liver again

Will appreciate your input

Happy-hacker profile image
Happy-hacker in reply to Akido

Hello Akido that’s good that you are now recovering. I would not feel comfortable advising you about your liver as I would hate to tell you the wrong thing and make you ill as I am not a qualified nutritionist or doctor. What I will say though is that SB are short chain fatty acids which you body makes itself so I think it would be highly unlikely to be a toxic problem. I suggest a quick call to your doctor just to check if you can take SB for your peace of mind. Fingers crossed you can start taking it, as you read from me above, it has changed my life and just gets better and better 😊 good luck and thanks for your comment. All the best.

Hello.I mentioned sodium butyrate to my gastro and he’d never heard of it so I doubt the gp will. What about talking to the people selling the tablets. I am over the moon with the results so far. No more bleeding, constipation nor heart burns. After years of spending silly money on all sorts of wonderful cures. This is the one for me. I’ll be forever grateful to happy hacker to have written this email.

hello again Happy -HackerI can’t believe I happened to see your post. I have been constipated for years, tried all sorts of remedies and spent a fortune on dieticians and nutritionists and I feel I am cured. My gastroenterologist who diagnosed me with UC after a colonoscopy said at the time I didn’t have typical symptoms. I now believe I don’t have UC at all. I am on 2 Pentasa a day and after talking to the IBD nurse I want to stop this medication. Thank you again.

Hello Idalmis I can’t begin to tell you how happy your message has made me, this is wonderful to hear, thank you so much for telling me. I’m thrilled I have been able to help you find your answer. All the best to you.

Hello again Happy-hacker.You’re going to think I am stalking you but I was wondering if you take any other bodybio supplements. I feel so well on burytate. I’ve increased my fibre intake without any bloating nor discomfort. I can’t I hope you’re still keeping well.just get over the fact I saw your message and I don’t really believe in fate or meant to be type of explanation. I want to see my gastroenterologist to ask him if I can stop the Pentasa as I now don’t believe I have colitis. He did say I didn’t present typical symptoms. I am worried to stop it just in case.

Happy-hacker profile image
Happy-hacker in reply to Idalmis

Hi Idalmis no I don’t think you’re stalking me! Am so pleased you’re getting better and better. I do take a Probiotic that supports normal bowel function but not from Bodybio. I also have a tsp of high strength manuka honey on dark rye ryvita before my breakfast each day. I feel the same as you, I can’t believe how incredible the SB is! I have reduced my Pentasa from 4g a day to 2g a day (a 1g sachet morning and night). If I were you I would reduce Pentasa slowly to allow your body to adjust.

Idalmis profile image
Idalmis

I only take 2 tablets a days and I struggle to swallow them. I didn’t know they did sachets. I have left a message to my IBD nurse but no reply so far.

Happy-hacker profile image
Happy-hacker in reply to Idalmis

The sachets contain granules which I find easy to swallow.

Idalmis profile image

I spoke to the IBD nurse today to ask whether I could stop Pentasa. She said no as she said it does protects you against bowel cancer. When I said I was wondering whether I really have UC, she said yes, that it was seen during a colonoscopy in 2016. So that’s that but butyrate put me in remission which Pentasa didn’t.

Happy-hacker profile image
Happy-hacker in reply to Idalmis

That’s fair enough, she can only advise you what has been proven to work. I suggest you carry on with the Pentasa alongside the SB until your next colonoscopy when you will know for sure whether the inflammation has gone…that’s what I’m doing. Fingers and toes crossed for both of us.

Hello again. So I started the slimming world diet and too much fibre and vegetables. I am suffering. I stopped but bad symptoms. I am waiting for a call from the IBD nurse but I have started taking Cortiment regardless. I hope you are still well .

Hi Idalmis am sorry you’re not feeling too good, that’s such a shame after everything was going so well! I would imagine a sudden change in diet would upset anyone’s constitution so don’t lose heart. Perhaps try introducing new foods gradually so you can monitor reactions as they happen? Wishing you well asap.

Any updates on progress? Thanks for sharing. Just purchased the product online. Been fighting Crohn's for 27 years. Main problem bile acid malabsorption and hence frequent diarhea. No bleeding, no pain. Weird

Happy-hacker in reply to ZandMan

Hi there thanks for your message, yes progress is good! Changed my life completely! Still taking 6 a day until my next colonoscopy. I have definitely noticed that if I eat too much sugary foods and/or alcohol I will be looser but I think that is a fairly normal reaction for anyone, IBD affected or not, so as long as I don’t go mad I’m fine! I hope with all my heart SB works for you, I will keep my fingers crossed 🤞 for you.
