Anyone have mri experience?

Hi all,

I guess the title says it all. Has anyone had an mri as past of exploring bowel issues? I’m not sure what to expect or how much of my bowel would be looked at ie is it just small intestines or large too?

Thanks in advance x

I had an MRI for chrons diagnosis in 2018.

Generally looking for small intestine inflammation.

Procedure is pretty painless, though you need to take on a fair amount of liquid (around 1.5L if I remember) which includes the dye, reasonably quickly - be ready to rush to the loo if your bowels aren’t the best :)

They call it a small bowel MRI but by the nature of where your small bowel is, it will pick up the large bowel too. The reason for these as they cant see your small bowel from a Colonoscopy or endoscopy only the very ends of it. It lasts about 45 minutes and it's quite noisy, you wear headphones and from what I remember they give you instructions though the headphones. You have to drink something before you have it.

Thank you for getting back to me. I do hope they can see colon too as I feel this is where i feel the most action going on (although I’m aware could be stuff going on elsewhere that I’m not feeling) xxxx

Not yet, I have had a letter to say there is a long waiting list and they will get to me when they can... in the mean time symptoms are getting worse 😕 hoping the mri will be able to spot something to get things moving. Keeping fingers crossed xxxx

Yes, and fluoroscope, and flexible sigmoid more times then I care to remember.

MRI was the easiest, really nothing to it. My only suggestion is, if you have sinus problems use something like AFRIN several times leading up to having the mRI so you wont feel like you are drowning.

Thank you for getting back to me! That’s a relief!! My sinuses seem ok, so hopefully no drowning feeling 😁 xxx

Any ideas how long results take? The radiographer said 6/8 weeks... I really hope not 😯

Who organised/referred you for the MRI, Gastro ward consultant or your GP - if the latter then it may we’ll take awhile.
