Pros and Cons of disclosing

Can anyone tell me the Pros and Cons of disclosing your disease to HR?

I have told my supervisor already but I don’t know what exactly she has told HR and I know she doesn’t understand my disease.

I am thinking I should probably go to HR myself so HR has clarity from me.

How much do you disclose?

I had 6years off work following my diagnosis, as unfit for even part time work. When I went for my first job after getting fit enough to work part-time, I was lucky, as I was an Occupational Therapist, who already had 11 years of varied experience, so applying for work in the Health Service, and there was a shortage of us at that time. I disclosed on my application form, and was offerred a 3 month contract to see if the stress of starting work again would result in a relapse. I was absolutely honest about the way the disease affected me. I did keep the job and by the time I needed my first hospital admission for surgery, had worked long enough to keep the job.

The only problems I had were with some fellow workers who thought of patients as part of "us" and "them"!! Us were Health service workers and Them were patients, some staff did have problems with an Us who had a longterm chronic condition, however, if you can do the job, just ignore people like this.

Do it. You need this on the books with them in case you have to go on short term or long term disability. They cannot discriminate against you because of this, if you are in the US

I’m in Ontario Canada.

What exactly do you tell them?

Do you just tell them your diagnosis?

Are they entitled to information from your doctor?

How much ch do you say?

I would have to drive to head office and set up an appointment to do this, is it a two month Ute appointment where you say ‘I have Crohns’ and leave? Honestly I don’t know, and I would like to be prepared in case they ask me any questions - I don’t want them knowing all my business, it would probably scare them cause they won’t understand my disease.
