sore shins
Most probably lack of cushioning and/or support in your shoes....
Don't be afraid to pop in to your local running specialist and get a gait analysis to ensure you get the right shoe for your requirements.
The term running specialist means we mainly/only stock running gear and the staff are all interested or participate in the sport. We are all very happy to speak to beginners and impart our knowledge and advice.
We are based in West Yorkshire and Lancashire, but if you are in a different county just let the forum know and I am sure others will suggest specialists in your area.
I do agree with completerunner, you could also try 'sweatshop' if you have one near by, I used them and found I was landing awkwardly, got the right trainers and found it a lot easier.
There are other independent sport specialist shops so have a look around.
I should go away, ensure you rest, but do get a gait analysis done, even if you don't buy the shoes at the store.
Remember, if you have never run before (I hadn't) you are going to get aches and pains as your body slowly gets used to it.
Good luck.
Its quite a common complaint with new runners but shouldn't be taken too lightly. Get your gait checked out if you can. To ease the discomfort once youv'e had your shower, turn the water to cold and run it over your shins, the cold water will help reduce any inflamation. Its kinder than ice but if its really bad a bag of peas wrapped in a tea towel to stop freezer burn held on the shins will help too. If the pain is bad some Ibuprofen will also help and is good for the inflamation. You may need to take an extra days rest if it becomes too bad. I ignored shin pain while doing C25K the first time and developed shin splints which was very, very painful.
