I'm thinking of getting a rowing machine, any recommendations?

Ideally it won't cost a fortune and can fold away.

No suggestions, but what an exciting idea!

I had a Tunturi, which was way good enough for me. Nice smooth action and plenty of levels (and it folded up too). Not used it for a while as it's in store at the moment.

I did read up a bit, apparently some aren't suitable for tall folk and I'm one tall mo fo!

I think I'll pop into a shop in town and check them out.

Now Greeners, there are no numbers involved, therefore no reason for you to get excited.

It seems a useful device to tone myself up a bit and Mrs Fingalo would use it too.

I bet there could be numbers involved! I can't imagine keep-fit equipment that doesn't deal in numbers somehow.

Mr Greenlegs used to row - in fact almost the first time we went out it was to go rowing on the river - and somehow I managed to row into a post! :D

Hi Fingalo

I used to 'indoor row' regularly - an excellent way of training - I only stopped because I stopped my gym membership and we don't have room at home.

Concept 2 machines are probably the best known - they are real workhorses - although rather large!

I heard they were the best, sadly they fall foul of both my criteria though, I don't want to splash out just in case I find it's not for me, also as you say, they're a bit big.

I quite like the rowing machines at my gym, gives the legs a bit of a rest (not totally) but helps to give the arms a workout.

Fingalo & Greenlegs there are numbers involved you can watch the distance decrease (slowly in my case) from 2000M down to 0000 :) Would love to hear how you get on and which make you get.

It's not definite, as Petal said, I like the idea of one because it's a good all round work out and sit ups and press ups and like aren't for me.

As I said, I'll probably pop into a shop in town and see if it's suitable.

I seem to remember someone saying that rowing is great at giving you an all-round workout??

As a rower many years ago, I can confirm that it gives you a great all-round work-out, including your legs. Great for weight loss too.

It's a matter of the arms and back working together to pull and the legs to push. Running was an essential part of our training to ensure there was enough strength in the legs.

Looking forward to hearing how you get on in the shops. :-)

If you don't want to splash out on new equipment until you are sure you'll use it then check out the sports section on Gumtree, if your area is anything like mine then there are usually people selling locally to you discarded equipment such as rowing machines, exercise bikes, gym equipment for a fraction of the new price.

Good thinking. It did occur to me that it's the kind of kit that folk buy then get little use out, before putting into store and then flogging, I just didn't think of Gumtree.
