Running to lose weight!

I need to lose about 2.5 stone. I am doing a well known diet and c25k. I found week1 fairly easy and moved onto week 2 today. It was ok!

At this stage I really can't believe I will be able to run for 5 minutes let alone 5K! However it feels good to be making the time for some regular exercise.

Welcome and congratulations on getting off the couch. As for running for 5k- well keep on with the programme and you will.

imnorunner - well, you are now! Stick to the programme and you'll amaze yourself. Laura only asks you to do reasonable things (though it may not seem reasonable at the time!) :)

Totally agree, the hardest part is done! You started!

All the best

agree with all of the above, i was in exactly the same position as you six weeks ago (although I need to lose more!). Today I managed to run 25 minutes non-stop, and even kept going for a couple more on top. I would literally never have believed it if someone had told me I would be capable of doing this. Just keep on going, keep believing, and it will pay off!

Thank you all. I will literally be amazed if I can run for 30 minutes! But, I will keep at it :-)

I've lost 4 1/2 stone in the last year & it all started with C25K. Dwnside - running alone won't lose you weight. Upside - Count your calories and do your runs and you WILL lose weight. AND feel better. Stick at it and it will work!

As all the others have said, so long as you stick to the schedule, repeating weeks if needed, you should be up to 30 minutes in a couple of months or so. The hardest part is getting started, so it's all downhill from here :0)

That is brilliant Malcy...did running get easier the lighter you got?

Nah - it's still a lot of puffin' and pantin'

GOTCHA! Yes, it did. my normal runs are 5k and I take about 26/27 mins (not too bad for age 57). I never did find the programme absolutely hard - just accepted I was an old, fat and boring bloke and took my time. Life-changing (in some ways life saving!) and one of the best decisions I ever made.

I"m down from 97kg to 68, blood pressure from 170 to 110-120, gone from maximum bp medication to none.

If anyone gets frustrated or whatever, I'd say to just think of the thin bloke inside them. It wants to shrug off the person they've become. A lot of both running & losing the fat is in the mind - for me, that's the key. Find a way to WANT to do it, and everythng else becomes much easier.

Good luck with the programme and the weight loss. I've lost about 10 since sept not really on a dieting but have upped my mileage considerably.

Stick with it, dieting alone or running alone will result in the weight loss but doing both is a powerful combination. Your weight loss will be just one benefit, you'll also lower your blood pressure, stabilise your blood glucose levels and lower your cholesterol, increase your lung capacity and if recent research is to be believed, stave off alzheimers. Win win win :-)

I'm also doing the diet/running combo and need to lose about 50 lbs (3.5 stone). Yesterday I made it through the podcast with the 5 minute runs and I'll be doing it again tomorrow. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Hang in there and good luck.

Well done for getting started - it's the best decision you'll make all year!

I started C25k 10 months ago, wanting to get fit and lose some lard! So far I've lost 3.5 stone and never felt better!

Good luck and stick with it!!
