Well, as with all sports/fitness it is best to check with the Doctor first because everyone is different, and it is really dependant upon whether there is any weakness in your knees/your weight etc. If the Doctor gives you the thumbs up then I would imagine the benefits would outweigh any negatives.

I have noticed some great times at the Saturday park run results for runners in the age 75-79 category and last week a lady in that age brackett ran the 5k in 27minutes and 28 seconds! I'm 45 and that's faster than me!! A man in 70-74 category did it in 23 minutes and 58 seconds which is staggering!

It just goes to show that age does not have to be a barrier.

Thanks for the reply, I have made an appointment with the doc but I do not think there will be a problem so I decided to have a go today with hubby in tow. I think I made good time and finished the program.

My goodness there's hope for me yet!!! I'm a newbie and I've just done week 5 run 1 and so far so good but I wouldn't win any prizes for speed! I'll settle for being able to run 5k comfortably. xxx

Thanks for the reply, I am only on week one and will give it a try. I hope I will make it to week 5.

If your doc is happy, I would try the plan. There are people in their nineties running marathons. it is important to wear trainers that give you enough support - I learnt the hard way and had knee pain until I bought some shoes for overpronators. Good luck and keep blogging.

Just double check with your dr! But I am excited for you, starting this! :-) Can't see it being a problem if you are reasonably fit anyway.

Go for it. I didn't start until I was 61 (hadn't run for 45 years) and graduated 3 months later on my 62nd birthday. I'm now running 10K reguilalrly. Follow Laura's advice; the programme works.
