I've recently completed week 2 but have a pain... - Couch to 5K
I've recently completed week 2 but have a pain in my lower back. Is it best to rest up? Anyone else suffered?
I got a lower back pain that went after the rest day. I have had 'bad backs' on and off and my physio recommends to keep moving if it is a dull ache but stop if turns into acute pain with nerve pain.
It seems to be a dull ache so will try & go for a run tomorrow. Thanks for your advice.
The advice from Rhonal/physio is good.
I suffer with a bad back a lot. I notice it mainly during the night and in the morning, especially after a long or fast run.
Make sure that you a re really hydrated before the run. It is best not to run as soon as you wake up, because this is when you are most dehydrated.
It's also good to do some back stretches (but I should take my own advise on that)
They say it's a good idea to stregthen your core too doing pilates or something.
The stretch that helped me was one for the piriformis - it's very simple and there are diagrams online. It specifically tightens up and is quite difficult to relax without a stretch.
I have had a similar problem - but more in hip area, also accompanied by slight sciatic pain. A physio fried says it is sacro illiac pain and a tight piriformis muscle. I have found doing specific exercises to stretch this has really helped (found them on google) also I do yoga and have tried the positions for strenghtening lower back, core and hamstring stretch really help too.
