Warm up.

Who out there does a thorough warm up session. I don’t skip it but I should give it more attention I know. I’m considering warming up in the house on my treadmill before going on my outside run. So then when I arrive at my start point I’m good to go. I only live a few minutes away in the car. I’m interested to hear other opinions regarding this topic. I’m fine with the cool down just struggling with the warm up. My energy and-fitness levels are just enough to get through the sessions at the moment and it feels like I am depleting them in the warm up before I start my run. Perhaps I am being paranoid. My approach both mentally and physically has changed since the runs got longer. It’s inexperience that’s driving this I expect.

I always do my warm up exercises before leaving the house and then do a brisk walk for a few minutes before running. Have stuck with this routine for many years!

Just remember, that as the weather gets colder❄️, warm ups become even more important as cooler muscles are more prone to injury!

My warm up is dead simple, stand on one leg for a minute (X2 obviously), 15-20 calf raises, then do them on one leg), rotate my hips, swing my legs, all done while I drink my coffee, then a 5 minute warmup walk.I might add a few leg lift/weird walk type exercises if my husband is tying his shoelaces or some other stretches if anything is stiff. By doing the warmup slowly while I do other things it may not be particularly scientific but at least it gets done.

I think the walk is probably the most effective bit of this. Park a little bit further from your starting point and you'll be good to go 😁

Thanks for the advice.

I just walk. From my door to my favourite start point is about 8 minutes of brisk walking, 10 mins of sauntering and I usually start slow with high knees and then make myself yomp for a couple of minutes before I kick into the run. Now I'm getting further through the program and running for longer I've added a loop into my cool down walk.

Yes I’ve started doing similar.

I have now learnt a new word - yomp!

I’ve been doing the warm up routine in the App which takes a few minutes but is not bad. I’ve abandoned using the app though and just follow it on my own as the music really gets on my nerves now. Do think a good warm up before leaving the house sets me up though. The 5 min walk is not enough for me.

I always do pre and post run stretches of my Achilles and hamstrings, having been forcibly sidelined by a persistent Achilles injury a couple of years ago. I'm not sure 'warming up' on the treadmill before running outside will add much TBH, but stretches, yes.

I follow a warm up routine of 5 minute exercises to stretch the muscles before the 5 minute brisk walk Then it’s good to go. I have popped the link on which was shared with me some months ago , hopefully it works

Just uploaded the link. I like the look of that. I will give it a go. I’m doing a few of those already. Thanks for sharing.

Hi,

I agree with Moopo and Rabbit561.

5mins walk is not enough

10mins brisk walk (yomp) is a bare minimum for me.

hello

I also use the indoor treadmill to warm up - just the 5 minute walking -then when I go outside it feels lovely and cool - as I get very hot! Do not worry - you will get stronger however even now I find the beginning of the run pretty difficult until about 3K to be honest 😂 but with time I know it will be easier.

It works well for me and I’m glad you do it too👍Happy Running 🏃‍♀️

I believe in you ❤️

I am on my second time of doing the C25k. It is a game changer to do 2 things-warm up properly AND hydrate sufficiently. Seems minor but it makes such a difference to the run. Physically for sure which has a knock on effect mentally.

Agreed. I’m paying much more attention to the warm up than I was when I started. It’s a no brainer. It’s folly to ignore it. I see that now.
