Some very inspiring stories here. I will be having valve replacement surgery at the end of August followed by a lung resection at the end of September. I haven't run for some while due to heart and lung issues.
I have signed up for the Race for Life 3k next June, any tips? Resources I could use? I will follow the C25K, but at age 70 I think I'd be better going for the 3k to start with.

🍏 Sandra we wish you all the very best as you face surgery and pray for the best outcome & recovery possible. How brave and wonderful that you have signed up for the 3K a really sensible and attainable goal. Couch to 5K will definitely be the best training for that and we will be here every step of that journey!
Keep posting and let us know how the surgery goes plus the start of that training. The other hot tip is to take a look at our strength and flex guide too. ☺️🏃♀️❤️🩹
hi SandraLlew ..Gosh, it’s sounds like you’ve a lot going on?? I wish you all the best for your operation…as far as running goes, I would still follow c25k…I know 5k is in the title but you don’t have to run that far….just running slowly…and steady…that will probably see you to around 3k xx
That was the idea, yes a lot going on - very slowly, tumour was diagnosed months ago. My youngest son is going to run the 3K with me. My main concern is cardio pulmonary rehab after the ops, hospital is over an hour away...
Whow ! SandraLlew you definitely have got a lot going on and I agree with Annieapple and Mummycav run slow and steady and 3k is a great distance to sign up for. Remember just take your time and you could maybe try the run/ walk method commonly known as jeffing . This is where you could to start with running for say two mins and walk quickly for 3 mins eventually increasing your running distance. Your walking should allow you to recover sufficiently enough so you can run again without feeling that you want to stop again more or less straight away,it also helps to improve your speed eventually. However I would for now just take it slow and steady.
You could also practice running 3k or under in 30 mins which is completely doable. However I would for the moment concentrate on your recovery from both big surgeries and take you lead from you consultants about exercise and just how much you can safely do before you go ahead with starting to train .I’m sure you will get all the correct advice and information from them.
Good luck with your surgery and please let us know how your doing along the way 🙋♀️👍
Thanks, consultants don't seem to talk to each other or the physios. It's a ll a mess, I have 6 dedicated nurses, a physio and 3 co-ordinators - it would work better if there was one person.
it gets complicated having both cardiac and respiratory consultants/ nurses involved, but it’s a shame they aren’t communicating better, always the way!
As a respiratory nurse, I would strongly recommend you go to the cardiac rehab post surgery if you have been offered this, as you will get loads of information and support. You might get offered pulmonary rehab as well!
Ask as many questions as you can, and good luck. Your positive attitude is amazing, my friend had heart and lungs transplant about 25 years ago, I so wish she would exercise!
Best of luck with your surgery, recovery and of course your running 🏃♀️ 😊
Thank you, so far I have been offered lung prehab which they then decided couldn't be done due to heart issue. Now they are suggesting lung prehab in between surgeries - personally not keen on this idea unless there is cardio input. We shall see what happens, I'm good at standing my ground and asking for detailed clinical reasons for their decisions.
As a person with ND I have to have realistic goals hence the 3k because it's too easy to just wallow in the pain and think that the recovery process is the end of it.
Best of luck with your surgeries and recoveries. When your doctors give you the ok, I think the C25K would be a great idea to get you to your 3K.
C25K is a bit of a misnomer. Many people aren't running 5K at the end of the programme - I definitely wasn't. It might be better to think of it as Couch to 30 minute run.
Do keep us posted and we look forward to hearing about your first runs!!!
Thank you, once I can run or at least jog I might start doing the park run again, that way I will have a front and back runner with me. The one nearest me has a long slow incline and one sharp downwards one.
Everyone here is so supportive, it really does help.
