Hi all. Its quite emotional for me as I have had a fair old journey to come back to starting the couch to 5k for a second time. My first was before lockdown and, even though i was not able to complete the graduation run as our group was cancelled due to covid, i continued to run. I built up my fitness, lost a lot of weight and every morning i was up and out as soon as it was light to run 7-10km. I felt awesome!! I was then struck with gallbladder pain and had emergency surgery to remove it. This had a knock on affect as i suffered a lot of bowel issues so couldnt go far from home without being prepared for an accident. My mood was very low as running was my 'good place'. It was my mental health cleanser. 3 years since that surgery and even though i have maintained a healthy diet and lifestyle genetics dealt me a second blow. I have CHD so have just had a heart stent fitted. Meds and a lack of oxygen combined with a narrowed artery have had a significant affect on my energy levels. Hopefully though this is the end of my poor health and the start of a new chapter. I loved couch to 5k as it was the kickstart to my love of running and i miss it. Just waiting on the green light from cardio rehab to say i can start. Like everyone says to me 'walk before you can run' but i am very impatient 😀. I just need that motivation and the green light to start the challenge again.
Waiting for the day: Hi all. Its quite emotional... - Couch to 5K
Waiting for the day
Wow-you’ve really been through it. Sending masses of good wishes your way. Hopefully your cardiac team will give you the go ahead soon. Really good luck to you with your recovery ❤️🩹
You've had a lot of obstacles but let's hope you soon get the all clear. My marathon running nephew had a heart attack in his 40s out of the blue. Afterwards the first thing he asked was when could he run again. The doctor was really surprised 'Most of our patients hate the idea of exercise but you...?'
He's made a really good recovery so here's hoping you are soon back to 100% too 😁
As the others have said... get that green light from the experts and you are ready to go... and we are all here ready to come with you!
Please, keep us posted
We'll be following your progress eagerly! It sounds as though the programme will serve you well, especially with the mandatory non-running days for recovery... an investment in the long term.
I often find a run easier than a walk but I am very aware that it's more 'exercise' for my heart so yes, no running the lights... to avoid blue ones!
So sorry to hear about your health issues but terrific for you to be thinking of coming back to something that gave you such pleasure.
Hopefully your healthcare professionals will give you the go ahead to get back to something you love.
Do keep us posted...we'll look forward to some positive news.
oh bless you, you certainly had a lot since lockdown.
I too have been through a fair bit. My husband passed away in 21 after 45 years and then December last year I too had a heart attack. I had to go to cardiac rehab after having a stent fitted l restarted Couch to 5K in April had to go back a few times and rerun the runs but now I’m up to week seven.
I’d never run before but after my husband passed after a two year battle with cancer, I wanted to get fit.
I’m now at the great age of 70 and intend to keep going( God willing) until my skinny little legs can do no more🤣
Keep going you can do it , you’re doing good just don’t give up😊
I’m hearing courage, enthusiasm and anticipation in your post. I do hope you are given the go ahead to get moving again .
I would think you would need to take it very gently and make the programme suit you rather than the other way around. Maybe start with far more gradual increases and fewer shorter runs.
I'm sure you will find and take proper medical/physio/ advice as to the best approach .
Lots of best wishes and looking forward to hearing what you do and how you progress.…
