hi everyone, I’d love your advice on new trainers. Since I finished the C25K a couple of months ago, I’ve got into the routine of running 2-3 times a week for 30 mins. This suits me for now and I’ve found more than this gives me sore heels.
So I’ve been thinking about getting some better trainers that support my feet a bit better.
Should I do the whole gait analysis / posh trainers thing, or given the amount I’m running am I better off getting something from my lovely local sports shop?
I’d love your trainer recommends too! Thank you! 😊

Honestly, I'd try and find a shop that does gait analysis and can advise you on shoes, at least for the first time. I've been running for 5 years now. I run 30 minutes 3 times a week and think wearing the correct shoes is a must because otherwise you could end up with problems. I was wearing my daughters old tennis shoes and ended up with shin splints and a groin injury during consolidation runs, so I can't recommend proper shoes enough.
The shoes I ended up buying were Brooks GTS Adrenalin although I found a previous season's version for half the price. I've generally stuck to Brooks although Mizuno are good and very springy!
Thanks so much really appreciate your advice! I’ve been wearing some old trainers and have been wondering if they are the reason why my heels are sore. I dont run very fast!
Your heels are probably sore because you're over-striding, and you're landing on them. Take shorter strides, and try to land on the middle of your foot, with the foot underneath your centre. Have you seen the Japanese Slow running video from the FAQ?
I'm all for using local shops Teapot55 , but unless your lovely local sports shop knows about running, please go elsewhere.
The correct shoes for you don't necessarily have to be posh or expensive. At the moment they don't need to cope with high mileage or seriously tough terrain, and, if you want to grab a bargain, they can be last season's or maybe a less popular colour. They do, however, have to be right for you, and that's where advice from experienced runners and gait analysis can be invaluable. Personally I'd rather wear less fashionable running clothes (much of my stuff is from Lidl and Decathlon, and the rest is bought in the sales!) than compromise on shoes.
Have you tried a Google search for running shops? They could highlight a shop you'd completely overlooked. I went to one after graduation and honestly wished I'd done it sooner. Unbeknownst to me I needed support shoes and the video analysis showed that not all such shoes are the same! Mine are a revelation.
As everyone has said, the right shoes are the most important piece of kit you'll buy for running. Get the gait analysis,
I'm the wrong side of 60 and not what you'd call a 'classic runner' but was made to feel really welcome. After the gait analysis I got to try on several pairs and run on the treadmill wearing them. What was really encouraging was when I said that the most expensive ones (which I rather liked the look of) weren't the most comfortable the salesman just took them off me and made me get on with choosing the better, cheaper option.
It's good to support local shops, and the one I go to really knows its stuff (Runners Edge, Southend on Sea)
I love a dilemma, I love gait analysis, I love supporting independents, I love people passionate about helping you for YOU not themselves, I love new trainers and lastly I agree (with love too) everything everybody has written in reply to you.
Happy Running ❤️
ps - I love a photo of people's new trainers and I do believe it is customary on here 🤣
The brooks website has a shoe finder app, it goes through a few small manoeuvres with you to help analyse your posture and gait. Then it tells you the ones best suited which you could then look around for on other sites. Brooks do have earlier models available for sale. I bought adrenalines from them for £91 which isn't bad and a 3 month run happy guarantee. They are super comfy and supportive.
Good luck with finding a pair and please post a pickie when you do
Can't wait to see them! :)Brooks guarantee mean you can actually run in them for up to 90 days and return them if any issues. Quite amazing. I read up on it and they give part worn shows to charities and the like, helping athletes that can't afford the cost of them.
If you do order a pair, they say that their shoes are about a size smaller than usual, so go a little larger maybe. I'm a 9 and I bought 9.5 and they feel good and they look great too
I had a gait analysis done yesterday, it’s worth doing. Staff were really helpful and I tried on a range of different brands and was able to run on the treadmill for a couple of minutes to get a feel for each pair.
Ended up with Brooks…… running in them for the first time this morning, exciting 😊
Nice!!!I just got a pair of those, and posted about them a couple of days ago. I think they'll work out for me, but I'm having to adjust from 1 brand to another😬, I'm just working on a phasing in plan😅
I have tried the gait analysis thing but didn't find the person who helped me particularly knowledgeable. However I recently went to my local shop and felt like I was in very safe hands - personally, I think small and local is the way to go. They won't sell you the wrong shoe just because they want your money, they'll sell you the right shoe because they want your repeat custom. 🤗
