I graduated a few weeks ago on the treadmill but today decided to go out early to the park, it was definitely harder and thought I was doing OK until a dog walker actyally walked past me ๐๐, how rude! I took it steady and passed the 5 k barrier so very happy,
First run outside: I graduated a few weeks ago... - Couch to 5K
First run outside
For your first outside run that's amazing, the walker who passed me once and made me feel I might look a bit silly had grey hair and a stick ๐๐๐ but one day I realised I was passing most walkers, so be very proud you did it. My first 5k was 52 minutes so I'd have trailed in behind you
I'm on Week 7 now, on the treadmill, and I'm still too afraid to brave the hilly area outside my house. Lol. It's good to know that it is, indeed, harder. That could be the next challenge when I graduate.
Great effort and congrats for finishing the programme ๐๐
well done for braving to outdoor world! I started on a treadmill 5yrs ago! I love being outside now except when itโs raining ๐
Welcome to the Great Outdoors. It is very different. Donโt worry about dog walkers - when they stop to pick up you get the chance to overtake and shout โEat my shorts!โ ๐
Congrats - it is different isn't it? I run inside during pollen season, but I love running outside and stop for all the dogs. Some of those walkers are fast!
On the treadmill the machine does your thinking for you. Outside you have to navigate your route, manage your own pace, consider other path users, avoid obstacles, etc. There is some research evidence that the mental problem solving involved combined with an elevated heart rate has a positive effect on brain health and reduces the risk of Alzheimerโs in later life. Not talking about mental health here (all running is good for that) but the physical health of the brain.
