Dear friends, it’s dark and cold here in my part of Sweden, till 8:30 am and again by 2:30 pm. On top of that, -12 and and crazy busy at work trying to get things off my table before Christmas. I had grand plans to run outside during the winter. The coldest I managed was -3, last Sunday. Now my face freezes and feels like it will fall off. It’s going to be gym for the rest of the winter till it starts warming up again. The problem is that I don’t enjoy gyms so well, but I do need to go regularly. Broke my arm a year and half ago and the strength training is very helpful and necessary. So, I should be able to run there as well. Hope to go this evening and do my next run on the treadmill 😬. I have been thinking about it in my head for the last 3 days, but not enough to get me through the gym door it seems 😀.
Need a little push : Dear friends, it’s dark and... - Couch to 5K
Need a little push
We all need a little push sometimes. Make it to the gym tonight...you will feel proud of yourself, and feel great afterwards! 😊 you've got this!
It's a tough one, as David Goggins says; motivation don't mean 💩 when it's freezing cold out and its warm inside. I was out at 4:49 this morning, -2 but felt worse. You need to find the thing in you that will get you going regardless of all else. When I hear the rain hammering down in the dark winter do I _want_ to get out there? Course not, it's cold, its uncomfortable, the visibility in my headtorch can be awful in the rain. What works for me is habit. I just do it, no excuses, no leeway, no half measures. I never regret it but if I gave myself a choice of whether to go or not I know many times I wouldn't.
You have to find your thing, whether that be a promise to someone that means more than your gremlins telling you not to bother... who would you absolutely not let down? I found a way to feel that way about promises to myself.
Good luck! You _won't _ regret it!
Thank you GoGo_JoJo, for reminding me of what’s important. I made a similar promise to myself about a year ago when I found myself skipping me-time for all the pending work which never ‘finishes’ anyway. It usually works but this winter has been harder because I have had several months now of regular running outside, enjoying nature and really just that feeling of being able to run. I need to find that feeling for gym-time for the coldest months.
I've never been attracted to gyms and knew I wouldn't keep it up but I really love indoor bouldering and climbing. Do you have any centres near to you? I would throughly recommend it as a fantastic way increase all round fitness. My problem is not going too often and having rest days rather than having to push myself to go.
And I’m moaning about a touch of frost! 🥶
Just a completely different idea: If your gym has some indoor rowers, that might be a great opportunity to try them when all the treadmills are taken.
I’d take a smartphone, some BT headphones, and pull up the play list linked here below. Rowing has done wonders for my running!
well Leuna you have me the push to stop moaning and go out it’s only -1 here so thank you for your encouragement now get down that gym !!!
and here I was feeling good about going out in -1C ! The cold in the UK doesn’t bother me so much; I can dress for it. It is treacherous conditions underfoot which keep me inside. Falls for 70 year olds are not recommended! -12 is seriously cold, although our daughter used to report temperatures much lower than that in Canada when going out for any reason wasn’t an option!
I guess trying to do something to keep fitness levels is the only option. Retirement works….I can pick my times for running, and I know the quiet periods at the gym on the rare occasions I have to resort to indoor stuff. I swim every week too as a good general non weight bearing exercise. Hope you work something out 🙂
Thank you Beachcomber66 for the lovely message. Keeping fit without injury is the goal and being able to pick your time is great! Something to look forward to. 😊
