couch to 5k injury!!!!

So I started off so well. Got to week 8 and totally addicted and then developed groin pain.

I iced it, rested it and nothing worked. I have reduced my run from 3 a week to 1 a week but it’s not getting any better.

has anyone experienced this? If so what worked?!

I have lost more weight than I ever had before and I feel I owe it to this programme and concerned I won’t be able to carry on doing what I have come to love!

I think you should go to your doctor to get a check up.

Sorry to hear this !First thing to say would be please do not run with pain .

It sounds like you are doing the right things , rest and ice !

If it is persistent then I would try and get an appointment with a sports physio.

I had about 18 days off with injury after week 8 run 1 and with correct diagnosis and recovery plan from my physio I was soon back running again !

Once diagnosed most of these things can be resolved.

Take care

thank you so much for this advice. I was considering the sports physio but didn’t know if I was being too dramatic!

Is this something you did privately or through the NHS?

Thank you 🙏🏼

I was lucky in finding a local private center near me and got an appointment within a few days . Yes, I needed to pay but to be honest it was well worth it .

He understood running injuries as he is an extreme marathon runner.

He had me back on the program in a very short time

Equally as important he gave me specific exercises for core strength.

Good luck 🤞

Always good to have a sports physio on standby.A good one is worth their weight in gold!

I agree with the advice here, do get it checked out, in the meantime though, I’ll share my story…..I was going great guns on the programme, 3 runs a week up to about week 7-8, when I got injuries, which turned out to be overuse - basically too much too soon…..

Once I’d recovered - and that may be no running for a while….I cut down to 2 runs a week and that suited me perfectly- my body needed extra time to recover in between runs…..and that’s just fine…took me longer to graduate yes (a lot longer in fact) but remember the programme is a guide, we’re all different…..

Running is high impact exercise and although humans are built to run, when, like me, you’ve sat on the couch for goodness knows how long, your body has to ‘learn’ how to do it again….

I did and still do other exercise in between - low impact, yoga, Pilates, walking etc.,

On 2 runs a week I made it up to half marathon distance, so don’t be discouraged, your body is telling you….hang on a minute….I’m struggling to keep up! 😉

Give yourself a break, you’re doing fantastic, and you will get there 👍

I hope my experience may be of some help

Thank you! That’s so reassuring.

I think my biggest fear is giving up running which I’ve grown to love so much!

Excellent advice already given. It could be an inflammatory condition in your Sacro iliac joint which means you need to rest it completely!! No running!! However it’s best to see your GP or a sports physio for a proper diagnosis. The runs will wait!! Many of us have been on the injury couch & we feel sad & sorry for you. Disappointing though it is, YOU WILL run again!!! 👍

thank you!

I have taken all of the above advice in and have just completed an online consultation with my Gp, let me tell you, being a nurse that does not happen often 🤔😅

I really appreciate all of the feedback! I’m at a place I never thought I would be with the couch to 5k and I’ve been clinging on to the hope that I could pull back a bit and fix myself!
