just completed week 3 and I’m getting pain and swelling on the inside of both knees!! Really don’t want to running I’m loving it. is it just something that happens due to years of being lazy or is it a sign of some kind of damage in the joint
knee pain!!!: just completed week 3 and I’m... - Couch to 5K
knee pain!!!
I can't help you with medical questions, perhaps you have been running a little too fast, if the pain and swelling persists don't run, make an appointment with your doctor.
It’s wonderful that you are enjoying your running & disappointing as it is..it’s never a good idea to run with pain before getting it sorted. You are probably fearful of being told to stop running..but continuing will do more damage.. get it sorted then you can continue the dream! Loads of us have restarted after physical injury.. you will be back before you know it!!
I agree with everyone else. The worst thing you could do is run on it and make it worse. You’re much safer waiting until the pain has completely gone. Have a look at the nhs guidelines for when to seek advice about a painful knee and how best to manage it in the meantime. Seeing a physic could be another good option.
It’s interesting you say you’re worried about giving up. What makes you think that will happen? You’re obviously really motivated to get back to running-that really shines through in your post. What do you think will change while you’re doing the best thing for your running and letting your body heal?
Could it be your shoes? A similar thing happened to me so I went and got my gait analysed and bought some proper running shoes.
The pain went.
Adjusting your form to reduce the amount of stress being transmitted through your knees should help. The book "The Lost Art of Running" by Shane Benzie, and the YouTube videos by Eric Orton are good sources of advice on this.
thanks for the advice I’ll look them up
You have had some good advice.
The main thing is, to go and get it checked by an expert. Your GP maybe the best first option but then a Sports Physio ( registered), would be the next option. Getting a diagnosis of what is happening is a great starting point.
Never run through pain as already stated and rest assured... those runs will be waiting for you!
Hi Overweightandlazy,
My left knee started the same as yours then I had so much pain even for the sheet or cover to sit on it was excruciating after X-rays and MRI it turned out to be OS stage 4 in one knee and stage 2 in the other. I’m the same age as you and female (am I allowed to say that these days haha) anyway don’t wait get it checked out hopefully it’s nothing much to worry about and you will be well on the road to recovery.
I’m devastated now as I am waiting on another op date for replacement (as my first date was cancelled) but I can no longer run. The good news is however I did complete C24K and there are lots of other machines I can still use in the gym instead of a becoming a runner I may become a swimmer, a cyclist, a middle weight, a rower all with OS.
Speedy recovery
thanks for the advice I’ve just been into the doctors and he’s put me on a six week waiting list to see a specialist. So no more running for me for the time being
Really glad you’ve been seen and have a referral. Did they give you any advice on other ways to stay active? It’s a shame to have to pause the running but it could be a good time to walk or try some other forms of exercise so you’re in the best shape to restart.
