๏ปฟSince graduation about (4weeks ago) I've been consolidating, varying routes and time. Usually 2 of 30 minutes and 1 of 40 all up down and around my local hill but although I'd got close I hadn't managed 5k. So today I decided to drive a short distance to a fairly flat route. I was aiming for a 40 minute run. It's a lovely route following a river through a park and then open countryside, mini M0use was even persuaded to come too. I got back to the car and Strava tells me I'd run 6k in total ๐งand 5k in 30 minutes ๐ง๐ง๐ง. The route a is lot flatter than my usual one but do I believe Strava? Not sure but I'm celebrating anyway. I didn't believe I could run for 30 minutes but I did it, now I've run 5 for k so what next? I don't know if I can run 1 0k but I think I have to try so my question is should I wait until I'm more comfortable running 5k or just go for it and would I be better following the magic plan for distance or time.

Hi M0use , well done on your 5k (or possibly 6k, though it's a bit weird that Strava's telling you 5k in 30 minutes then 1k in 10 minutes, unless that's warm-up and cool-down walks?)
In your position I think I'd start with the 60 minute version of the Magic Plan, then swap over to the distance version once you've hit the hour. You could also go straight to the distance plan (as I did) as long as you're comfortable being on your feet for longer.
Strava was also telling me I'd done 1 k in 47 seconds which I definitely don't believe ๐คฃ and I stopped Strava before my cool down walk so not sure what was happening. I'll have to rerun the route someday, maybe for run 3 of week 1 of the magic plan. I guess I can always swap to the time version if it all gets too much. I've walked the route often and it is about 5.5 - 6 k and my total running time was 35 minutes. Thanks for the advice. ๐
๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ to doing 1km in 47 seconds! Have fun with the Magic Plan ๐
Congratulations to you MOuse on running 1K, according to Strava, in 47 seconds, that is a supersonic๐ speed, I have a funny feeling that is wrong. ๐. anyway, even if it is incorrect, well done on that run. ๐๐พ
Well done you... super run and super pikkie... ! Well done Woofster too!
If you want to go for it.. then do...!
Make sure you do feel ready for it though... you are still a fairly new runner... and if you felt you needed a tad more ready, lots of different runs of different lengths and pace and times will all help the runs evolve.
The more you do, the better it gets...short runs, differing routes, as you are doing and lovely longer, see where you get to runs... they do build up stamina and strength.
Do increase some of your strength and stamina work too on some of those rest days... you will need it as the runs increase
I waited a year before I tried the 10K, but I am older than you
When you are ready, Ju-Ju's Magic Plan is brilliant... and you decide... the time or distance... no pressure with the time one and if you get to 10K.. well , brilliant!

Many of us used that and have done many times since, after injury or illness etc... I used it again a few months ago... you will enjoy it and there is as much support on Bridge to 10 K forum too as there is here, and loads of friends, including Instructor57 and me
Thanks Oldfloss , great advice as always. I seem to be comfortable running for 40 minutes up and down my hill and todays mainly flat route was a joy (techy issues aside). I'm thinking I'll give the magic plan a try, I can always detour back to doing my own thing if it gets too much and go back to it again next year. I'll let you know how it goes on the Bridge to 10k forum. After surprising myself with what I've managed to do so far I'd feel as if I have to at least have a go. ๐
Certainly ! I will keep an eye out for you and you know you can always ease back if need be ! Take the advice from IannodaTruffe and enjoy ! x
I'm your age M0use and I'll confess that I went onto the Magic Plan very soon after completing C25K, because it actually stopped me from trying to do too much too soon! If I hadn't, I'd have been trying to do more and more every time I ran, which would've been a really bad idea. Do come over to the Bridge to 10k forum!
Congratulations!
The important thing to bear in mind is keeping the incremental increases in distance and duration sensible, so that you don't do too much too soon.
The 10% rule is used by most experienced runners to gradually increase their training. It is explained in this FAQ Post healthunlocked.com/couchto5....
If you plan your runs carefully with this rule as your guide then you can avoid injuring yourself by accidentally pushing your body beyond what it is conditioned to cope with.
Take care and have fun.
Very well done on your 5k .Your doing great ..
Come over and say hello on the bridge to 10k forum for support on whatever you do next ! ๐
