Calling all hearing impaired runners

Hi,

I need advise from anyone who is deaf and uses over ear hearing aids.

Currently I run with my music played through speaker on my phone, as I need my hearing aids to stay safe, traffic etc (I’m sure this is very loud)

I’d like to get out and about, change my current, very isolated route.

This works for me, but may not be so great for others.

Best headphones please which are compatible with hearing aids ie to wear and not cause feedback?

Thanks x

Hey what type of phone do you have? Some NHS audiology services now provide Bluetooth lite hearing aids which act q bit like Bluetooth headphones so you can hear the music through your hearing aids. You can alter the music streaming to just one aid and use the other to listen for environmental sounds. Most of these hearing aids are iphone compatible with android you often have to get a streamer to act as a go between. If you check out connevans deafequipment.co.uk there are other alternative headphones available as well.

Thanks,I’m very fortunate that I live in an extremely isolated area. Only traffic is from tractors. That said it very hilly!

Need a flattish place to run...this entails more traffic.

I’ll look into headphones, guessing it’ll be trial and error. Meanwhile, I’ll plod (and I mean plod) on

I have Bluetooth hearing aids which I got specifically for their streaming capacity. I do use them for running (or in my case, slow jogging!). I keep the volume low and never, ever run on the road. In practice, I can cross roads safely, still able to hear traffic. But I aim to head for park, towpath or other traffic-free zone. Cycles coming up behind are the biggest hazard, but that is always a problem for me anyway. Wish they would ring their bells, which I can hear.... Good luck in your quest.

I use just one headphone to hear the instructions on the app and one hearing aid to be safe in traffic . Works for me. Good luck !

Hi everyone! I saw your post and wanted to draw your attention to a survey we are currently running. It is about how we can improve the accessibility of the NHS Couch to 5K app for people who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus. Your feedback with your experience and opinion will influence the decisions how to design the app, so it becomes more inclusive and accessible in the future!

With "we" I mean the Departement of Health and Social Care and RNID (we support people who are deaf, have hearing loss and tinnitus).

That's the link to our website with more information and the survey: rnid.org.uk/2023/04/making-...

Or directly to the survey: surveymonkey.co.uk/r/TV22VSQ

Thanks everyone! And if you have any more thoughts or questions, please drop me a message!

my Phonac hearing aids will stream Bluetooth from my phone, and I can adjust the balance between ambient sound (through the aids) and the stream, using an app on the phone. It works well.
