Morning peoples, Gorgeous day yesterday and as I graduated two weeks ago, I thought I’d give the Osterley House Parkrun a go. It was a super nice event, warm welcome and bags of encouragement from everyone. My goodness that last 1k was tough. I was determined to keep running to the end, which I did, but felt pretty wobbly afterwards. Proud of myself though! No aches or pains but knackered. Thing is, at almost 70, did I do the right thing in attempting it? Should I try again or scale back for a month or so? Advice welcome please!

Hi there, of course you did! Parkrun is for everyone, there are 80 year olds out there who regularly do parkrun, and volunteer - I would very much like to think I will still be able to complete a parkrun in my 80’s.........It’s a great way to meet people as well....

Any time is a good time at parkrun, whether you walk, run, skip or whatever, a great way to have a bit of regular exercise

I hope you’ll go again - my one warning - it’s addictive! T-shirts to collect.....for volunteering and number of completed parkruns..... .πŸ˜‰

Congratulations on your first parkrun !Was that your first 5K run and did you run all the way or run/walk ?

As you progress you may now find it useful to mix your runs up a bit, even doing some shorter runs of around 3 or 3.5K .

Then if you do another park run you could walk a bit if you felt the need or run the full 5K if you are comfortable

The main thing is not to push too much too soon .

Enjoy 😁

Thank you for your advice. It was my first 5k. I’ve managed six 30 min runs in the last two weeks. I was determined to run it and managed right to the end. I’ll definitely do another soon but perhaps be a little kinder to myself!!

Congratulations.

As stated in the guide to post C25k running healthunlocked.com/couchto5... it is advisable to use the 10% rule to increase your weekly training load, so as long as you did not exceed that then you will probably be fine, regardless of age.

However, as we age we do need to listen to our bodies carefully as recovery times increase. This FAQ Post about Running and Aging has some more detail healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

Keep running, keep smiling.

Well done! Yes, carry on if you feel good, (there are people at Parkrun well into thier 80s) after the knackeredness subsides there's a great buzz feeling yes? you know the mantra slow n steady and when the going gets tough slow down.
