Week 2 Starts Tomorrow!

Hi Everyone, thought I'd write a post to give me more people to talk to about this. Everyone I talk to says "well just run 5k, it's easy" - well it isn't easy for me.

Week 1 runs were fine, not enjoyable but I felt great afterwards (so it is real then?) Stitch is proving annoying but nothing that is stopping me at the moment. Any advice on that which really works? I've been pinching and breathing and anything I can, my body is probably in shock haha.

I started C25K for my mental health - I stopped drinking booze over 2 years ago and now really try to look after myself and put the work in to stay shiny happy people (most of the time)

So let's go with week 2 tomorrow, slight niggle in my right hamstring. So should I actually wait until that feels completely fine before I go?

Well done on giving up the booze. That is hard to do so lots of credit to you 👏👏.

Regarding your hamstring, I would wait until you feel ready. There is no rush to get through the programme and it will take longer if you get injured 👍

You will get lots of links from the regulars shortly to warm ups, stretches and great tips to help you through c25k. Good luck and enjoy.

Hey you and well done! I found that I don't have any problems with stitches when I do not drink too much right before the run and I tend to wait about 2 hours after eating before I go out running. Of course that depends on the kind of meal you've had, among other things. Just saying that for me, it was a timing issue and it took me quite a few runs to figure out how my body can cope best with this new kind of stress...I'm sure some of the more experienced runners here have other tips and ideas in that regard. Hope your hamstring gets better soon and good luck on your next run! :)

There are two groups of people who think a 5k is easy:

1/ People who can run larger distances… just yesterday I replied to someone on one of our sister forum who has signed up for their first half marathon… their longest run to date is 15km and they commented that it’s “just a parkrun” further! This comment is indeed true, and said runner will be more than fine completing the distance. “It’s just another 5k” gives a strange boost forwards the end of a long run! I don’t think that anybody on these forums would tell a newcomer that it’s easy though, as we all remember how hard it is to complete that first 5k, and indeed how hard W1R1 is. I have done a HM and it wasn’t as hard as that first run. The only runners I think would describe it as easy are those who have always been runners… quite a rare breed.

2/ Non-runners. The average person cannot run a mile… but they don’t know this fact. It’s 3 and a bit miles, how hard ca. it be? Lace up guys and go try it!

So, from one W1R1 survivor to another… it’s not easy… but you will do it. You could then go on to run ultramarathons if you so desired. The only person who can limit you is yourself… and a lot of the fun for me is proving people wrong who say I can’t, but I also get a kick out of proving people wrong who say it’s easy.

People who don’t do things are either wildly optimistic or pessimistic… those who have been there are realists. Someone once told me I don’t have what it takes to run a marathon… my current mission is to run further than that. That guy hadn’t ever run more than a couple of miles… I will raise a glass to him at the end of my run!

Enjoy your journey… one day you will honestly be able to run a 5k easily, but I already can see you will never undermine someone just starting out by belittling the challenge ahead of them.

Hi SlowSober , UnfitNoMore is right, though I'd add that even when you're able to run much further, 5k doesn't always feel easy!

If someone is saying "Well just run 5k, it's easy" I'd be tempted to ask them how they know and maybe invite them to prove it! Any experienced runner who's belittling your achievements is unlikely to be capable of giving you good advice. Anyone who can't run 5k has no right to tell you what a doddle it is, because they know nothing about it.

Enjoy C25K!
