CATCH-UP CORNER...WEEK 2... Slip off the running shoes and come on in.... :)

Hello again, my running friends.

Another week gone and we are into March and heading towards the Spring.

I am here again in the corner, with extra cushions this week, as I am expecting to see a few of you here, sharing your running experiences.

We are beginning to see a few more new runners on the forum, I think the better weather may be bringing folk out, ( a bit like the daffodils).

I have had a mixed week, managing short run and a longer one this morning.

The short run was lovely, but the one this morning was hard, and it took some effort to complete and that got me thinking about some of the posts I have been reading this week; whether from new runners or those of us who are repeating C25K or returning to running after injury or illness.

There are quite a few posts where folk are in turmoil about loss of motivation,

not feeling fit enough, and worries, even at this early stage about speed or distance.

Well. Here in the Catch-Up Corner it is time to settle back and take a breather.

So, while we are here, let's just take stock.

When we begin C25K it is easy to try to push too hard.

Sometimes, reading other posts can cause us to be swayed or persuaded, or even encouraged, often with the best of intentions, by other speedier, or less experienced runners.

BUT:

This programme is intended as a slow, structured build up to 30-minute runs after nine weeks. (If it takes you longer, then that is fine…. If you never make 5K, that is fine… you do not have to, to become a Graduate.) It is also intended to be enjoyable. Fun is meant to be had on your journey, learning about yourself and your running, getting fitter and stronger with every week.

Now, speed? Well, my slow, is not your slow… my slow, is slower than some and speedier than others. There are runners on here, who if moving slowly, would be at least 1K ahead of me, also moving slowly.

But, my runs are done at my pace, my comfortable and happy pace and I choose to run as slowly or as quickly as I am comfortable with, depending on the run.

This is your C25K and your choice of pace, but try, maybe, to find that comfortable pace for yourself, and, if you are new to running, then do, take it steadily through those first uncertain runs of the programme, and as the runs increase in time, start to feel your stamina increasing, your strength building and those running legs growing. Find that happy running pace for yourself. Get there having had fun.

Now... loss of motivation is a more tricky issue. We may have really strong reasons for beginning this programme, but sometimes hanging on to those reasons can be really hard. Life, itself is not easy at the moment, with the Pandemic still ongoing and all the news currently, weighing heavy on all us. Pressure of work and family commitments and the blinking weather can all impact greatly on us.

So what can we do?

Well no one can give anyone else motivation, there is no magic formula; it does have to come from within, from us! But what we can do is, support each other, with encouragement and empathy, and we can look at ourselves.

We are here, we are running and we have to realise just how terrific that is. We have to believe in ourselves, we have to have strength and stamina and the confidence to stay buoyant despite all, whilst accepting that sometimes, there may be blips!

Self confidence is paramount.... and the knowledge that we can do this... there is a quotation that I use so often, there is a reason for that; it is true.

“ Believe you can and you're halfway there”.

This morning, I was almost ready to give up and go home, but these words came into my head, so I tightened my glutes, ( thanks Bluebirdrunner ), I rounded my ankles, I relaxed my shoulders and I lifted my head.... I ran, and I finished my run.

So, now we know... we may be struggling at times, but we are not alone; it happens to all of us, and because of that, we are here for each other and we will do all we can to keep each other going, come what may!

Right, now, we need to know what you have all been up to, so please, do pop in and let us know:)

Oldfloss x

P.S.

Thank you Oldfloss …just a gentle reminder now and again with your wise words lifts our spirits and reminds us to be kind to ourselves as well as others xxx

Well... I think maybe we need to get back on track? Perhaps not that much use, but sometimes we need to remind ourselves that we are stronger than we think? x

Reassuring & encouraging words OF - thank you. 🤗Well, I am now sufficiently recovered from Covid to gently get going again. I am visiting my brother in the US (use or lose the plane vouchers from earlier pandemic cancellation), so W3R2 (redoing C25K post injury) happened amid wind & sheltering snowy woods on Cape Cod with glimpses of salt marshes. Oh my, it was a hard run, but I chugged super slowly & completed it. 😄

OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toElfe5

I am so glad that you are feeling so much stronger. What a terrible thing this virus is.Lovely that you are in the US with your brother too and that run !

It sounds just absolutely idyllic... is there any chance of a photograph? I don't know why but just the name Cape Cod, conjures up wonderful images for me?

The thing is you did that run and you took it steadily, as your body was telling you to... and I feel it will, as you get even stronger, feel a tad easier.

A very WELL DONE to you, and do keep us posted please as you enjoy your tine with your family xxx

Thanks OF, & yes, looking forward to running becoming easier- as it was pre- Covid. Also yes, Cape Cod is very beautiful! 😄 Upload a photo… 🤔…I’ll try…

Ha! Success! 😂 My brother striding across the snowy beach at sunset.

None of my leggings is that colourful. 🤣

They have subtle patterning on black or a big manufacturer's logo in reflective white.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply tonowster

... and those are a pair of my more discreet ones....they are usually my seaside leggings. My first pair when I lost the Grey Snail mindset, my first real running leggings were quite distinctive but more subtle!I still have them and wear them but over the years they have got a tad worn !

Me in what were my first proper running clothes, I still love them!

Hi thanks for this, really enjoyed reading it and also loving your leggings! I have just finished week 3, had to repeat the third run due to knee issues. I am intending to start doing the knee strength exercises which I think will help. Going slower is the key for me I think as I go into my first week four run on Friday! Fingers crossed I can make it I am loving it so far :)

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toGreenrunner47

This sounds just great! The knee exercises are just so helpful...which ones are you using currently? Many of us have these issues at some time...me included!

Slow and steady is the perfect pace, ( your slow and steady) , it gets us exactly to where you want to be, having really enjoyed the whole thing. It is a great programme, why rush it?

Huge well done you, we shall watch for your posts and your Friday run post!

I LOVE those leggings! But I would never be able to wear them, not having your svelte figure! Your post is good for me this week for I have faltered and know not what to do. I was on the third time of going for graduation (e.g., Week 2,) when I had to see the doctor and I got off course. Now after 5(?) days of not running, do I revert to Week 1? Or try to see what my body says? Plus I just got boosted yesterday and didn't run yesterday or today--felt sleepy all day today but had to run behind Hubby all afternoon--the original Eveready Bunny....☹️😴

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toLiisaM

You can wear anything that you care to! Flaunt it...!My svelte figure is even smore svelte currently and I am working really hard to build back the muscle and pop some more weight on!

You have had a blip haven't you? Oh gosh.

Well, if I were you... I would head back to Week 1. Give that booster time to settle too. these vaccinations are working hard and our body needs time to recover.

Just take it slow and steady and use Week 1 as your warm up... ? Listen to your body too, and do what it says:)

Yes, even when you are under par, you do not have any respite from your daily chores... this is why the running as and when you can do it does give you a little time to be you .

Take care my friend xx

PS

Was that a third or fourth booster?

LiisaM profile image
LiisaMGraduate in reply toOldfloss

Oh, OF, that was my third shot--my first booster. I'm late getting it because of "life" interventions--cars not working, trying to figure out how to get the cars to the repair shop what with my Hubby being uncooperative in public, that sort of thing. I should have had it last November! However, a kind general manager had someone come and get one of our cars, as well as return it so now we have one car working, at least.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toLiisaM

That's good..I did wonder why you were having it now.Yes...a car...essential!

Looking out this morning there are some more 'pops' of colour in the gardens (there is a patch of crocus that match your leggings!) The birds are singing and it smells like Spring. I have really reduced the time I am spending with the news, I really cannot bear it. I feel angry, scared, sad and powerless in equal measures. It is hard to even contemplate running.

However, I am now nearly 5 years into running and have run through (personally, nationally and internationally) bad times and good and it really helps me to celebrate and to mourn. Running is a gift for me and when my motivation dips, I try and remember that. I don't always get out there as much as I should but I keep on going, mainly because I can.

Have a good week all and keep give everyone you love, a special extra squeeze x

Thank you for so much for this.... your words are ones that I, and I am sure many, many of us can identify with.

So, so much beauty around us and the complete contrast with the horrendous turmoil of all that is happening currently.

Even stepping out of the door can be a real challenge.

The runs are always there for us... and are so forgiving , they have the ability to soothe, calm and heal.

I am glad that you get out when you are able... and your words, " ... I keep going mainly because I can". those are words which resonate also. with many of us.

Thank you x

I took the photograph , late afternoon, the images of Ukraine in my head. I felt as if I must be in another world. Total peace.

A world apart, a deserted beach, total serenity.

Hello Oldfloss and everyone. Love those leggings! I'm thrilled to be back at Week 1 this week after a month on the IC with sore ankles after Week 4. Thanks to this forum I have taken the advice to run slow and am determined to graduate one day!

I do love reading your posts, it’s a bit like being wrapped in a cosy blanket… I’m still building up slowly to more regular runs. Getting ready for run two this week. Taking on board what you said in your post I’m just going to try and relax and shuffle, if I have to take a breather so be it. The sky is blue, sun is shining though rather blustery, revisited C25K week 7 run 3, wish me luck.

I am glad..we are all in need of a bit of support right now xBuilding back gently is the way to go..and hopefully will keep us on track.

Hi OF, wise words as ever and it got me thinking about my own running. I’m a C25K restarter and am back at week 8, enjoying the longer runs and itching to get up to 5k again - which at my speed won’t be close at the end of C25K! But for anyone new to this running lark, please don’t lose motivation because you're ‘only’ doing 2, 3, 4k or whatever it might be - turn it on it’s head and tell yourself that you, yes you, are now able to run 2,3 or 4k . And who knew that would ever happen - it’s brilliant and worth celebrating! I’m slower than anyone else I know but don’t worry about it any more; I’m 69 and accept I’ll never be a gazelle but as you say, it doesn’t matter, it’s still running! I adore those leggings, my brightest are a rather sober navy blue which I wear as a change to my normal black and am not sure I could squeeze into some of the gorgeous colourful ones I see being sported! But who knows what the next year will bring, by my 70th I might be able to change that - after all, I never thought I could run did I?! Wishing you and everyone else happy running!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toOldgirlruns

I'm following you, but runs are well interspersed.. ! Week 4 for me starts tomorrow!

Thank you so much for this post, it is so helpful for our new running friends to understand that it is their run, at their pace.

Celebrating every run we take is the thing and enjoying it too!

I am not, as you well know a gazelle either... although I did during the first long lockdown acquire a swishy pony tail :) But we are as you say brilliant! Out there, doing it:)

Now... the leggings... you really can do this... I ditched the grey an black after the first 18 months and I have never looked back!

I always try to watch for the sales and I am so happy and grateful that I am able to run, I want to wear happy, bright colours and if it makes folk smile seeing a weird old lady bimbling along in psychedelic leggings or Little Princess crops... then so be it... I think a smile, especially now, is a great result...

Lots of sales still on... go on... take a look and maybe when you re Graduate, time for a little treat!

Maybe start reasonably discreet and build up!

Discreet....

sturdybydesign.com/collecti...

Not so discreet... my latest acquisition!

sturdybydesign.com/collecti...

Go for it:) xx

PS

Of course there are other brands, these just suit my body shape:)

Hi Oldfloss, great post for this week, thank you.

Good advise on keeping the pace gentle.

After eight weeks, I seem to have settled into a steady, even pace, which suits me well. No too fast but not quite so snail like as when I started! The improvements in stamina have also been noticeable, and I suppose that this is measured by reaching the heady heights of running not stop for 28 minutes.

The improvement in self-confidence is inspiring. Now I know that finding an extra two minutes to over the next week or more should not be too much of a problem, as long as I take it steady.

The only problem is those pesky hills, which seem to creep up on me at the wrong moment. Sometimes they feel more like ⛰️than mere〰️but I seem to get there in the end.

As for what I cover my legs with, I cannot really compete. Has anyone else noticed that most running tights for men seem to be really boring colours - e.g. black and navy? Maybe I should get myself lost on the internet looking for something more adventurous.

Great that the weather is picking up and getting warmer. I may have to resort to showing a bit more leg, maybe below the knee only for now. Watch out everyone, not a pretty sight!!

Happy running everyone.
