Happy First of March everyone and for those folk with links to Wales....

Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus … Happy St David's Day !

Well...you have guessed it.. here I am again. In the Catch Up- Corner, a tad earlier than usual and jumping for joy to be here with you,.

So this month I am hoping to see a few more folk arriving in the corner; I have extra cushions ordered and there is plenty of space.

February was a great month for many of us, if somewhat challenging. A few of us also, facing setbacks and tricky times...life is still throwing all sorts of issues at us, but despite all that, we did what we were able and not pressuring ourselves too much. It is hard sometimes.

So.. I am, today using a post, ( re-jigged), that I posted when I was, in conjunction with one of our super running friends here,  UnfitNoMore , working in the Strength and Flex Forum .

This feels to me to be a good time, as I have noticed a fair few posts about, twinges, niggles and some injuries, that folk are experiencing. Many of us suffer with these sorts of injuries when we first begin to run regularly.

If you have not heard of the Strength and Flex Forum before... all will be revealed. If you have heard of it, because you have been there before, and are a Graduate or are repeating C25K, then it will certainly be worth taking another look around.

So...

We have a great sister site right here... it is the Strength and Flex forum..

healthunlocked.com/strength...

It is being run now by the incredible  CBDB , who is working tirelessly, to give us links, advice and ideas to keep us moving. It is so helpful.

It is all about the type of strength and stamina work that we advise our runners to do alongside their running, it is one of our very own sister forums and it is brilliant... and if you have not visited it yet... you really should have! ( That includes all of us).

Great tips and advice for the strength and stamina work that many of us find so, so useful to do alongside our running.

Also great, if by some twist of fate you have an injury... the ideas for keeping up our strength and stamina in those times, are very useful.

The rest of our body really needs to keep up with our legs!

Many of us find this out, both when we are first setting out on our running adventures and then again, as the runs get longer, or if we have had to take time out.

So, on some of our rest days, non impact work is essential.

That is what the forum is all about... and you don't need a gym, or oodles of expensive equipment to be able to participate!

You just need, Yourself, some self discipline and a lot of enthusiasm .

I have gathered a few basic links here.. beginning with the NHS site for Strength and Flex.

Many, many folk did and still do use these, alongside their running.

nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/s...

So... just moving on from that basic link... here are some more ideas for the kind of exercise many new runners ( and some more experienced), ask about.

Beginning with dynamic pre runs stretches and warm ups...

Some folk do dynamic stretches before running, some not... you find what you need and what works for you.. but any pre run work must be dynamic...

Then, after our wonderful run, however long or short... we do our post run cool down and stretching...and, again many of us find these basic stretches perfectly adequate.

nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/h...

I did, when I was on the S and F Forum regularly, post exercises for different parts of our running body. Every part !

Here is the link where the aforesaid CBDB, put all those exercises together in one link...isn't she great?

healthunlocked.com/strength...

Here is the link to our super walking forum too,

healthunlocked.com/active10

These are just my ideas and links, but there is so much more now, on the Strength and Flex forum.

So what I would really like you to do, is, to just think how important strength and stamina work is to you.

Listen to your body and note, any minor twinges, or persistent aches and pains... areas where you feel there is a need for some extra work.

Non-impact exercise on some of your rest days is essential, especially as the runs get longer, there is so, so much to choose from, and all of which can be done without the expense of a gym membership

E.g.

Yoga.

yogawithadriene.com/

Pilates

runnersworld.com/yoga-pilates/

Begin to form a regime of core strength and stamina work for yourself, keep it simple, do it on some of your rest days and it will soon become a habit... a good one

These are just a very few basic links to give you and idea of what you may find on the forum, so, please... do pay a visit, and once you are there... do take a good look around and do keep popping in too!

You are worth it!

OldFloss x

PS

That is me, yes, weird old lady... jumping for joy... those are not my real ears by the way!

Hi Oldfloss. Thank you for the suggestions and links. This should be something for me to take up for Lent. Unfortunately I am not very good at giving up things!

Hello.. well...this is good then...because it will support any weaknesses you have in giving up things, with plenty of extra exercise?

LanciaA profile image

Yes, I think you are right with this one. The additional exercise with running recently has definitely helped motivate me in other areas. It is great to have something else new to help me along with my running journey.

You are so funny! ("I have extra cushions ordered")I am in reporting mode today and not in the ICU but maybe I should be.

Anyway, I am happy March has sprung and spring is on the way. I am on Week 2 of my third C25k. Our driveway has been kept cleared of snow by my son so I started again, and am happy the weather has cooperated to let me get to Week 2--plus I am keeping up with my weight exercises. Boring report, but there you have it.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to LiisaM

Boring report!!!! Nonsense!

This is some of the best news that I have heard for a very long time!

You are on the way again and on Week2. Very well done on getting out there, you have quite literally come through thick and thin to get here, and here you are.

Do keep up those exercises, they are really going to show their benefits as you move forward; and do remember to keep it slow and steady. as ever, we know that works for us:)

Good news on the son too... clearing the snow! March is indeed here and how welcome it is, even with the pouring rain here this morning; there are daffodils showing their yellow heads and there were blue skies yesterday!

Looking forward to your next pop in report! xx

Hello and thank you for the information, strength and flex is definitely something I will look into and take up. Today was my graduation day 🙂 Today was my graduation day. If anybody would like to read my post you can do so here:

Yeayayyayay ! HUGE congratulations to you. Very well done!

Yes, as you move forward you are going to find that a simple regular strength and stamina routine will pay dividends. It does not have to be too pressured, and you don't have to focus on everything at once...

Have a look around the S and F forum and maybe out together a short session that suits you!

Off to read your Graduating post now !

Brilliant!

Hi Oldfloss and all who are here. I’m chilling and snuggling in to the cushions. That photo is wonderful showing clearly the meaning of joy. I remember well your post on Strength and flex about feet and ankles, so along with 10 squats I daily do 10 heel raises several times a day, and when my legs are flagging I find the spring in my feet and ankles and think of you 😀

Facing some life challenges but running when I can

Thank you for having this cosy corner

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to SueAppleRun

Welcome...

Good to see you here. I am snuggling in the corner too! Very wet here this morning.

I love the idea of Spring in your feet . It conjures up a wonderful image.

Funnily enough I use those foot exercises a lot. I do the ankle ones and I often do a toe creep across the floor too. I find the calf exercise very useful too as I am getting errr... a tad older:)

You work very hard and getting the runs in is important for your well being.... and you have some great locations to run in too!

Looking forward to reading your posts x

Hi WaS, the thing about this forum is that there’s always something useful to learn! OF gave us a great reminder about the S and F site and now you’ve come up with some more exercises- I like the idea of heel raises and squats, even I can manage those! Thank you!

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate in reply to Oldgirlruns

The first 10 squats were really hard but i soon found them easier, a colleague was doing squats and got up to 80 so I did 80 one day but got really bored so went back to 10, 10 while brushing my teeth, 10 while kettle was on, 10 while getting dressed etc and I’m mostly doing close to 80 most days so my legs are a lot stronger, heel raises really have made a difference to the strength in my feet and ankles which i never really expected, I do star jumps too but not very many

Oldgirlruns profile image
OldgirlrunsGraduate in reply to SueAppleRun

80? 80? Blimey! Think I’ll start with 10 and just see how it goes!

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate in reply to Oldgirlruns

Yes flipping 80,I got bored after 20 but had to keep going to prove i could, but 10 is over quite quickly so not at all boring, at work I pop to the loo, do 10 squats have a quick pee and after washing my hands am back at my desk in minutes, 😀but the first time i found 10 hard but not too hard

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to Oldgirlruns

Do them slowly and start with a gentle , not too deep squat.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to Oldgirlruns

I do my squats whilst cleaning my teeth.. at least 50... Sumo squats waiting for the kettle to boil... it is just a daily habit and, I even do a few squats at bed time, whilst teeth cleaning!

It works because my electric tooth brush has a brushing timer, so I do 10 for front, 10 for back each side... front top, front bottom and then the back of those... it's just a routine.

Hi Oldfloss, I had some twinges and generally bad runs so I took just over a week off. I Jeffed 4 miles yesterday and am hoping to do a normal 4 or so miles tomorrow. What a fab photo of you! Have a good week x

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to dreamrun

Very well done you and very well done for just easing back...the early days after Graduation can be mixed and as we move forward we find the odd niggle might occur. In the niggle stakes, a lot of people often find knee niggles, perhaps not surprisingly, but we have the strategies to cope with any issues.

Very well done on that run...I love Jeffing, it is a way to get in some distance and really enjoy it.

On my first HM there were quite a lot of folk Jeffing it, and my goodness they could move!

You are doing well and we look forward to watching your progress as you run on! x

I did Strength and Flex in the first lockdown, running figure-eights around my tiny living room between exercises! Need to get a regular routine of knee and ankle exercises as I've noticed now I'm on week 6 (restarted the programme to recover from COVID) my ankles get tired well before I run out of breath. I'm back at the point where I'm really enjoying exercising and my body can do what I'm asking it to so I need to make sure I'm looking after it, an injury at this point would be devastating.

I'm so excited for spring! My new treadmill served me well over February but I did my last 3 runs outside since the weather has improved and I definitely prefer being out and about. I've noticed a lot more birds in my garden the last few days and a pigeon seems to be building a nest in my big tree so it's definitely starting to feel like spring!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to annatonina

This is great news and so good that your TM kept you on track, but yes, it is so good to get outside isn't it?Those first signs of better weather and longer days to come can, quite literally, out a spring into our step.

There are loads of knee and ankle routines on those links... the ankle on is so easy and I can tell you it really works, it does!

It mentions Trail Running but they are great exercises...

youtube.com/watch?v=X7DvnV2...

Taking care of our running body is essential and not just because of running. I neglected that fact in October 2020 and it is still impacting on me, even now.

Well done you! I shall watch for your posts. x

Oh Oldfloss, your links are very timely, I need to up my game slightly. One Sunday I was sat with a brew and a bacon buttie, browsing Facebook, and bizarrely thought, yes Caroline, enter that 10K event in April, that's a great idea 🙈🤷🏼‍♀️😳😱

To be fair, there's a big emphasis on the fun element and an invitation to walk, run, or whatever you want to do (I joggle 😁). It's also a course round the Yorkshire Wildlife Park which is just down the road from me and I get to run past polar bears 🐻‍❄️😊 if they're acting as pacers I'm breaking all records 🤣🤣

My aim is to run at least two thirds but not going to be silly about it, self-inflicted injury is something I'm not going to repeat ☹

Some posts ago I mentioned a foal in a field and I finally managed to get a pic of him. He's got a little friend now too 😊😍

Loving your photo 🙂 🐇🐰 x

Foal in a field
Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to Jackapoodle

Well done you on entering that 10K... great motivation with something to look forwards to and great too to know that you can take it steadily!

I am heading towards 10K but following the Magic Plan and doing it steadily, I should re Graduate in April I think :)

The route sounds fantastic and using polar bears as pacers! What a suoper location and it sounds t o be a really relaxed affair?

I am certainly putting a tad more Strength work and stamina work into some rest days, as I know that I need to be strong.

I have tried ( during Red January to find a mix of exercise that works for me) . Core strength and legs mainly...

I found a great site for walking... I started with the Walk a Mile session and it really was fun. I would normally not use anything like this...but with the weather in January, I needed to shake up the daily activities, and the lass who does the sessions makes me feel good whilst I am doing it!

This is a link to one of her sessions... One day I did a wo mile one, they are pacey but get the heart beating wonderfully!

youtube.com/watch?v=C_rKOIJ...

Every bit of cores strength work we do is valuable and injury we definitely do not want.

That little foal is a delight! Worth running just to see him and his new friend now too !

I shall and we shall be watching for your posts!

Jackapoodle profile image
JackapoodleGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

This looks fab, thank you for the link. I really enjoy walking so this looks fun (if I can keep up!!). In all honesty, I never intended to run the whole of the 10k, my progress is slow and steady, I just did it, as you say, for the motivation and a friendly experience. And the medal has a Tapir on it, I think, so heck I'd crawl round for that 😁 x

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to Jackapoodle

Oh wow... the small runner in training and I would love a medal with a Tapir on it... she is so into Rainforest anything currently.. mainly how to save them all... she is only 5 and a half! We had a Rainforest day Monday... on her care day with us!Making a diorama was just one activity but I think the Tapir was hiding!

Once I got into the pace of the video, the walking was great and I really did feel as if I had a good workout... the legs certainly knew it. Slow gives us time to enjoy! Well done you!

Rainforest... we could run away from the lizards and the crocodile !
Jackapoodle profile image
JackapoodleGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

Oh Oldfloss how wonderful is that diorama?! Just gorgeous. Isn't it incredible that such young children are aware of these issues and passionate to change things? Gives hope for the future 🥰 the YWP is a wonderful place to visit with the small runner in training with red pandas, giant otters, meerkats as well as lions, tigers, giraffes etc. I'm not on commission I promise 😄 x

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to Jackapoodle

I think that come the better weather the family might have to take the tourer up there! It sounds terrific.Small one is so knowledgeable and really aware, the whole day we had, was full of so much.. including keeping a tally of the trees being chopped down by the developers!!!

Well done on entering a 10k run Jackapoodle - that’ll give you the incentive to get out in the spring sunshine (she said hopefully!) - it sounds like a really lovely venue although as a joggler myself, if there are polar bears on the prowl it might just be the incentive I need to get speedy!

Jackapoodle profile image
JackapoodleGraduate in reply to Oldgirlruns

Haha I've been reading that your average polar bear runs well over 20 miles per hour and can cover about 2K at that speed 😳 I'm definitely brunch then 🤣🤣 hopefully all enclosures firmly secured 😊You can only imagine though that the animals must think what on earth are these weird humans doing now? 😂

Really looking forward to it, should be a lovely event. Bit nervous tho if I'm honest 😬

Hey guys!

My week has been fun… kinda. Managed to destroy my phone with one final impact (screen and speaker have been battle scarred for a while) so new confusing one is here! Just managed ti keep my run streak alive with a 22:15 run on the 31st. Could be late today as well as I’m waiting for a new washing machine (originally ordered early November for a 7 day delivery… coming this afternoon finally!)

Strength & Flex really helped me complete c25k and beyond. I always hated weight training, but am now doing that for a couple of hours a week, and weighted squats are my new love… who’d have thunk it?!

Keep thinking about dusting the bikes off and getting into cycling… but then I don’t know if I have the time to run daily and ride, so I stop thinking about it. I think I need a Tacx or similar so I can ride during the football in the living room. Rowing machines also keep appearing on my phone screen which is obviously because I use fitness sites, but why those and not dreadmills and other equipment 🤷‍♂️

Not here anywhere near as often as I’d like. The web interface does seem better now though (not sure if it’s the phone or some updates) so maybe I will be around more going forwards.

Yeah… pretty good… RED now since 29/12 and loving it even if sometimes I run super late at night. I do have a talent though for scaring the crap out of women during these runs… not deliberately I hasten to add. Even got the same woman twice recently in one run 🤣😱

Other than running life is pretty wonderful despite world events.

How’s you?

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply to UnfitNoMore

I noticed a couple of "Night time activities" of yours on Strava, I thought it looked dodgy 😂😉

Cool! Yeah, bit worried about world events.

I'm fine, although seem to be plagued with ill health at the moment! One day I will be well...

UnfitNoMore profile image

We were discussing “night time activities” in a group the other week during a discussion on people who cheat their step count… had to cover my innocent eyes 🤣

I was once told to not worry about things I cannot influence… so no news channel for me at the moment!

Hope you get there soon… better weather may help a little there… I find when I’m happier the niggles go away. So many colds going around, which I guess has a lot to do with the great unmasking.

Hey you, it is good to see you and to know that you are still running and on track.. even if breaking a phone is part of it!

S and F has indeed been a great support to so many of us and saved many of us too from really injuring ourselves!

Cycling is a great rest day exercise... we are hoping to head into the Beddgelert Forest next time we are here for a tad longer!

CBDB is a rowing champion.. she will give you all the lowdown on that as an exercise!

It would be good to have you here more, personal experience is what we need to support the new runners and each other.

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

My PT liked the rowing machine… I think as I could run 2 hours on the dreadmill but it could floor me in under 5 minutes 🤣. Anyways, I no longer use a gym, I got a big green one all around me. I’m sure it’s someone telling me that I should row, and if I’m going to buy an exercise machine, that one would make the most sense.

Cycling and I never really got along as, even in my smoking days, the car fumes really annoyed me and my throat. Indoor cycling has evolved a lot of course.

I love the photo OF! 😂Yes stretching and strength work is so beneficial (& I find Pilates very helpful for stopping me creaking & keeping those 60+ aches & pains at bay)…but how to prevent exercises from being boring?? I do standing exercises near the kitchen window so I can watch the birds on the feeder & listen to favourite programs in BBC sounds. What do other people do to stop the creeping boredom /not bothering of stretching at bay?

On the running front- I had just redone W2 of C25K after a long time off with PF when Covid struck. I tried again a bit too soon, so stopped & will wait a few days & try again. 😄

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirlGraduate in reply to Elfe5

Hi Elfe, your question just struck a chord with me. I've had to do exercises for soooooo... looonggggg.... and when I caught first a cold and then covid, it was a great excuse to stop them for a while - but then of course, I quickly lost condition and now I'm playing catchup. The only thing that works for me now lockdown is over is to go to an ACTUAL PILATES CLASS. I might add in a zumba class again when I'm ready. Apart from that I'm like Sola - I do a few squats every day - usually when I'm brushing my teeth or waiting for the kettle to boil (also a good time to balance on one leg.) And I need to get back in the habit of doing a few calf raises every time I pass the stairs. I do a few hamstring stretches before I get out of bed - it wards off that PF pain on the soles of the feet.

Hallo Oldfloss, is there room for me in the corner as well?! I loved your post - I’ve never really got into the Strength and Flex site, I don’t know why. But your enthusiasm has spurred me on to take a look now! And I hadn’t realised CBDB was now in charge of it, Another good reason for taking a look! My C25K Revisited journey continues - week 7 now and I’m enjoying the longer uninterrupted runs. And no niggles or injuries so far, unlike the first time I did it, hopefully it’ll stay that way! Enjoy your springtime running ! Gotta love those ears - Dexy5 and I had some very similar a few years ago when we did a Race for Life (pre running days)!

There is a cushion, just for you. Yes, CBDB has really given us so many useful links and ideas, and challenges too.It is something that we all. I feel., at times neglect but core strength is so important in our running.

I try so hard , even if I am sort in time, now to fit something in. That is why for me, the 10 or 15 minute sessions on Bodyfit with Amy work.

Yesterday for example, I should have run,,, but torrential rain here in Wales made that impossible. So, using the 10/15 minute sessions I did a workout which got everything going.

As it happens, the rain had stopped by 3 and when we got in from a wet day in the mountains, I did, ( something I rarely do) go out for a late short run! :)

We love our cushions LiisaM, even the IC (injury couch) has them - which helps if you end up there at any time! I’m so impressed at your running in snow conditions, I can barely walk upright in the stuff! Well done on getting stuck into the plan again, enjoy those springtime runs!
