I nearly always carry my phone in case I break a leg, find an injured child, see a house on fire and occasionally to listen to music.........oh and I have a Crane watch from Aldi.
Instructor57 posted a thread about running watches just the other day Hidden : healthunlocked.com/couchto5...
There was also this thread, which I imagine prompted the aforementioned post: healthunlocked.com/couchto5...
As you'll see, Garmins are very popular. The choice of model depends on your budget and what you really want from a watch: looks, running-only or multi-sports, music or not, and much more. I have a Forerunner 45s. Suits me just fine - it doesn't play music but I take my phone with me anyway.
If I were going for a watch now I'd probably get a Forerunner 45 or 55. I got a Vivoactive 3 which is a good general purpose activity watch but I would prefer buttons over a touch screen given experience with one. The GPS in the Forerunners is better. (Also I'm not sure if the battery in the V3 would last for more than three hours of recording.)
And don't ditch the phone. You'll need it for emergencies, even if it's just to summon a ride home when you've run out of energy.
I have an Apple Watch and I love it. I know it's not the best for running, my partner uses a Garmin watch which has a lot more features, but it works for what I need it to do. I have also downloaded the Watch to 5K app so I can complete the C25K without having to take my phone out with me.
I have a Forerunner 245. It does everything I need. It depends how much you are willing to spend.
I have a Garmin Venu which has a lot of features (some I haven't used yet), and I always take my phone with me for safety.
Thanks was just asking for general responses from people who use them. No need for some of the unhelpful responses.
After reading here about the same question I've gotten myself a Forerunner 45S. It is small, but not too small and easy to use. In case you use Strava on your phone, you can connect Strava with the Garmin watch. In my opinion you cannot go wrong with the Forerunner 45 / 45S.
I'm closing comments here, and will most probably remove the post later. Thank you to everyone who responded so helpfully to this question, I want you to know that we really appreciate your input!!
