Hi everyone, I’m Nick it’s good to be here, just completed week 1 run 1 and feel good, I’m doing this as like many others I’m battling with depression right now and struggling as I’ve only just admitted it after 2 or 3 years of trying to convince myself that I was “ok”
I haven’t run for a couple of years and I’m hoping this will help,
Happy running everyone 🏃♂️

Congratulations on starting C25K with run 1 of week 1 and welcome to the forum, just take all the runs slowly, you can repeat any runs or week's if you wish to, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, no running on consecutive days as that could cause a injury, good luck for your running journey with C25K, onwards and upwards, post your progress here and ask the expert administrators if you are having any running problems, however, if you have any medical questions ask your doctor, good luck. 👍 🏃🏾
I feel the same. I’m running every day as I really feel it helps my mood. I feel so good when I’ve completed a run. My daughter’s dog comes with me, she’s a great jogging companion.
Happy running to you too! This is such a good program and I have found running a great mood lifter with all sorts of unexpected benefits-including this really friendly forum.🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️
Depression is like being in a jet black dark moonscape. Seems like no way out and certainly no direction that will give you any chance of getting out.
However, you can run. Its not complicated - one foot in front of the other and repeat.
It's something concrete to get through - and simple to just "do".
It is something you do without other people - and so turns "alone" into a positive or at least a requirement, a "reason" to aloneness.
It allows you to switch from your mind spiraling downward, to focusing on your body and the physical sensations occuring.
It beats back Depression with each yard done - each achievement - and thus substitutes, no matter how incrementally, despair for success.
And at wherever you draw your finish line, you reached that finish line. You have, despite what the darkness has you feeling, "been able to do something".
You might start with the feeling that the "pain" of running will at least be better than the godawful pain of depression. But you will end having proven to yourself that you can still do something that gives you some control over your body and your mind.
Run to go towards something, not to flee from anything. Leave the chaos and darkness by the wayside with every step and replace them with the potential and possibilities and achievements that are the scenery and environment you run through....and towards.
Good luck! Running is all about being in the moment, so is so good for our mental health. It is very 'pure'. It's important I think to get a balance between progressing as a runner, but being kind to ourselves and not giving ourselves a hard time about it if there's an 'off' day. I wish you good luck.
I am sure this will help lift you out of depression, as running and all vigorous aerobic exercise raises the endorphin levels. Try listening to a pod cast (BBC Sounds is good) while you run to take your mind off the effort and you can feel like you are having a double whammy of positivity and learning. I listen to "the infinite monkey cage' as I like science and humour and it fits the bill perfectly, but whatever is right for you. I am sure by Christmas or much sooner, you will be seeing the benefits physically and mentally in a big way! Consider yourself fondly hugged!
Welcome Run-Ride-Run and congratulations on taking your first step on what has the potential to be an amazing journey.
Funnily enough, I was just this morning talking to my husband about how running for the past 3.5 months has made as significant a difference to my head as it has to my body. I get into a headspace where nothing else matters except my legs, my lungs, and my playlist and that, for me, is very liberating in an otherwise sometimes very stressful life.
Good luck on your running journey. Keep us updated and ask for support if you need it - there's a lovely bunch of folks on here ☺️
I definitely think it helps - got me doing something for myself - that takes the mind away for 30 minutes. Plus you get incremental small wins and a bit of a push, even small bits of positive achievement make me feel better about myself. What I like best is when the trainer says think about how far you’ve come and you actually can think back to when parts of this program felt impossible and you actually did them. I don’t feel comfortable bragging or complaining to my friends or family - but this forum is great and super supportive. Plus you always get responses to your posts and questions from someone whose been there. I hope it helps you too.
Well done on the first run. Hope the running helps, as it helps so many every run!!!
Welcome R-R-R 😊. This is a wonderfully supportive forum and you will find it a great place to come for advice and encouragement. Running C25k taught me so much about myself and I am hooked on running and still going 18 months later, because it makes me feel good! I get something back from every run, even the tough ones. Enjoy your journey. 😊
