Hi all, just joined today, used to run a bit when i was younger but haven't done any for about 35 years. i have always kept myself reasonably fit but really enjoying and struggling with running. I haven't ventured outside yet just on the treadmill, up to 5mph for about 4 miles . hoping to go outside as soon as i build up the nerve.

🍏👏 Welcome! So well done Stephen! Making the decision to run and then doing it for the first time outside is the most difficult part…after that you are away! However you are doing very well on the treadmill. Are you following our C25K program??

Here is a guide if you want to look through it.

and one specifically for treadmills

Thanks, have been following the program roughly, but will follow it a bit closer when I get outside more

Welcome! It sounds like your comeback has been going really well! Would you be happy to share how you’ve built up and what your running looks like now? I’m wondering if you’ve already surpassed the couch to 5k programme if you’re running 4 miles…

You’re more than welcome here even if that’s the case, but it might be that the bridge to 10k board might suit better depending on where you are.

Glad you’ve found us and can’t wait to hear about your runs!

Hi thanks for the welcome. Although I have ran 4 miles on the treadmill its the thought of going out on to the street that concerns me, Having to take into consideration hills, traffic, other people and nerves etc. I started off as advised with walking and running and built it up very slowly from there. Everything is done very slowly and carefully. This seems like a good supportive group which is what I am looking for. Thanks again

That makes total sense! When you start running outside, you can tell yourself that you’re in a brilliant position because of all the work you’ve done on the treadmill. The structure of the couch to 5k programme could be really helpful with the transition. It sounds like you’re doing (and have done!) all the right things to get to where you want to be. You’ve got a load of virtual run buddies here to cheer you on!

Thanks really appreciate that

Hello and good to read you!

You will be well placed when you do get outside and I suspect once you have done two or three outdoor runs you will wonder what you were worrying about.

When I started C25k I was very aware of being a non runner older non athletic looking person. I found a quiet lane and ran up and down it on repeat for the required intervals. It gave me a lot of confidence and by the time I graduated I felt happy to be seen running.

I would however really encourage you to watch the Japanese slow running video. It might help you, as it did me, get an idea of pacing yourself carefully outdoors as it is easy to push too hard too soon.

Look forward to hearing how you get on.

Best wishes

Thanks for your response, I will get outside soon and give it a go soon 👍

welcome

Just go for it outside. Once I realised nobody actually notices you I forgot about what I might look like and enjoyed the fresh air. Once you are over 50 so long as you don’t run naked down the high street you become pretty much invisible anyway 👍

🤣🤣 I will keep that in mind before I venture outside

Enjoy the outdoors when the time is right. The changing seasons and nature are a wonderful distraction.
