New to this bit feeling the universe is telling me not to!

Good morning. As an overweight 55yr old woman who hasn’t run/jogged for over 40yrs, I have no idea what I’m doing here!

2 weeks ago I read up on the C25K and thought I’d give it a go. Dug out some gym clothing, layered up and then found I hadn’t any trainers! Under bed storage boxes were rummaged and I found a pair of 10yr old sketchers. They’ll do. Sorted my Mum out with her audio book (I’m her Carer). Threw some treats to distract the dog and headed out the back door, app ready, music cued. Disaster 1. I’m such a Luddite, I hadn’t realised my new phone (iPhone X) doesn’t have a headphone socket! So I went for a 30min power walk instead. Epic fail.

Last week, new earbuds at the ready, gear on (new trainers haven’t arrived yet), Mum sorted, dog sorted. Stepped outside and it started to snow. ITS APRIL!! So, I want back I doors and did 30mins on the cross trainer. Epic fail.

Today, ready to roll (still no trainers yet) and the C25K app is frozen on the “choose your trainer) screen. Back indoors, delete and redownload the app. Still frozen. I can honestly tell you I sat down and had a little sob. The max I can leave Mum on her own is 1hr and I’d spent 20mins fiddling with the app. A short call to my sensible supportive partner and he suggested it wasn’t as a big a deal as I thought. So I went for another power walk.

I feel like the universe is telling me to stay fat?

Hi Twiglet65 sorry you havn't been able to start the C25K yet. I am a 57yrold, over weight women who also hadn't run for 40ish yrs. I started the programme about 9 wks ago, am still on WK2 R2. It has taken me so long due to life , the weather, my changing motivation levels. I was amazed that I could actually run, have done 10 runs altogether. Well done for getting the motivation to start the programme. I am sure that first run will be under your belt soon. Good luck, if I can do it, I'm sure you can. Let me know how you get on : )

Welcome to the forum and well done on your intent..........you will get there.

C25K can transform lives in ways that you can not yet imagine. Don't allow it to be a big deal.........it is just a training plan and it works.

If you cannot make the app work there are links in the guide to the old school podcast version.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

Enjoy your journey.

Hello! I’m 60 in 2 weeks and started 10 weeks ago to lose weight, get fit and improve my mental health. It works! Stick with it!! I’m thinner, fitter and a much happier girl! My dogs love it too! You can do it but be kind to yourself on your journey. Keep reading all the info from Iannoda and let us know how it goes! X

Hello and welcome 👋

It’s ok. Do not worry about any universal hex that’s been placed upon your head because you’ve had some issues with getting started.

The most important thing is that you have made a start already... you’ve read up about it, you’ve downloaded the app, you’ve dug out the gear, you’ve got the earbuds and you know what time you have to work with.

Your journey has already begun and you haven’t realised it. Preparing for embarking on something different is just as important as actually getting out the door and starting the app. You are preparing your mind for something new. These are all very positive things and should not be dismissed.

There are lots of people on here who can help you with anything relating to the programme, even tech issues - so please don’t be afraid to ask for help!

You’ll be ok. You’ll begin when it’s the right time for you! Let us know how your first run goes! 😊

I can totally see where you are coming from, but think when you graduate.. You've coped with all these issues and still made it to the end. Don't let this defeat you. Each step is a lesson learnt!

We've got your back here!! Go for it

Hi Twiglet, I'm a 53 yr old, overweight woman. I started C25K in January, and I've just run my first full 5K. I'm a carer too, and it is difficult sometimes – but I now see running as an essential thing I do for my own self-care, which makes me stronger for looking after my daughter. I try to stick to specific times and days, but sometimes life happens and if I don't get to run I just try again the next day. Some of my C25K weeks stretched over two weeks, sometimes I started the week's runs on a Friday, and sometimes I repeated weeks. Just take it at your own pace. The fact that you are power walking and doing sessions on the cross trainer means that you're already in a really good place for starting your running journey! Good luck, and I hope you end up loving running as much as I now do!

The universe would never tell you that! You have made a brilliant decision to start Couch to 5K, and you CAN do it!!!

Re. the app freezing - you are not the first person to have reported this recently, seems as though there is a problem the developers need to look into. In the meantime, there is a podcast version of the programme you can download to your phone to get you started. The music on it may not be to your taste, but it is at least an experience that a lot of people have shared over the years!

Oh, please don't give up! It's the best thing you ever tried!

I used the original podcasts downloaded to my laptop into I tunes then put onto an iPod. Also it is much smaller and lighter to carry around. You can buy them on Ebay. Never mind, you might have got your phone sorted out by now.

Good Luck! :)
