My last few runs have been tough both physically and mentally, and it’s been hard to summon up the enthusiasm to keep going at times. But I know that if I can get to the point of enjoyment it’ll be wonderful, and I do at least enjoy the feeling of doing something For Me...
I should have run on Friday, or Saturday, or yesterday - but I was tired, then we were out all day, then it was too hot. So I had to go today. After much procrastination I reckoned that I wasn’t going to get a better opportunity than before dinner. Teen 2 decided they could come for a walk with me(!) so off we went - to try the fields this time.
I haven’t run the fields here before, but with the combination of them being nice and flat, and me having to remain within hotspot distance for Teen 2, is was A Very Good Run! Far slower than usual (1.6 miles instead of 2.1!), and oh it felt great 😊 I’ll definitely be exploring more of the fields around here to give my legs a break from the hills on the roads.
All in all, a lovely evening run!

Can you speak aloud, clear, ungasping sentences as you run?.........if not, you are going too fast.
Slowing down to the recommended easy conversational pace makes it more achievable and for most, more enjoyable. It is also the most effective pace to develop your aerobic base.
You may find distraction helpful, so that the last things you think about are time and the physicality of running. If music doesn't do it, try podcasts or audiobooks. I used to give myself a running commentary on everything that I could see, hear, feel and smell as I ran, in full florid sentences.
I do normally talk out loud a bit as I run to make sure I’m not getting too breathless. Having someone to talk to a bit tonight helped - and just going slowly on the uneven ground helped too I’m sure.
Good to hear that you had a good run. The natural world is so much more enjoyable than the urban one.A quick question - do those distances include the warm-up/down walk and the walking sections?
Remember, and as IannodeTruffe says, run at a speed where you can/could hold a conversation. I run on my own so I speak to my local sheep, Dartmoor ponies and occasionally the local Highland cows that roam on this part of the moor.
Enjoy R2 and take R3 S L O W L Y. The 20 mins can seem daunting, but with adjusted speed you can and will do it. The main thing is running for 20 mins, and not how far or fast you go. W6R1 catches people out, so slow and steady after W5R3.
Enjoy the runs, and here's to slightly warmer weather in the coming weeks... gosh, it's been a chilly few days.
Yes the distances include the walking at start and end - I can’t be faffed with starting an app once I’m already going. 😄
Looking out at today’s third snow flurry I’m very glad I went out yesterday!
I really didn’t think I could run slower than I had been doing - but clearly I can! I’m going to stick to the fields for the next few runs I think. Far nicer than roads, and if it helps me go slowly that’s only good!
Don’t know how I missed this Mrs R!!!! I’m delighted that you got out there and that you felt great! I love running with my son - although he spends the time complaining that I’m too slow lol. I hope teen 2 was gentle on you lol.
I run back roads up to the stables and downhill home and love the peace and quiet. Running anywhere close to the countryside definitely feels wonderful - and the views can be uplifting.
You are the wee voice in my head keeping me going - thank you so much for that.
