First run for a looooooong time

I started my C25K journey 4 years ago & successfully graduated, albeit it a bit slower than others. I spent quite a lot of time on the IC after graduating with sore feet, ankles and knees. Fast forward to September - a friend of a friend who is a podiatrist saw me limping at a gathering and said to come and see her. I eventually went in December. She told me I was very hyper mobile and I got some custom orthotics as directed by her. After some initial discomfort whilst I broke them in, I haven’t had any pain walking so under the podiatrist’s guidance gave a run a go yesterday. There was no pain during the run, best feeling ever! Today I half expected to wake up in pain but no pain - although my thighs are a bit stiff. I did W1R1 and although I did take it really slow, I was amazed at the difference with the orthotics. Throughout my time on the IC I have despaired, I missed the buzz but eventually lost all motivation to run because each time I tried it hurt. I guess this time away from running taught me to get things checked out, wish I’d done it sooner but better late than never! I hope that this is the start of my journey back to being a runner. So pleased to be back 😊

Welcome back to the forum and well done on restarting.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

Enjoy your journey.

Thanks. I’m so glad to be able to come back to it. I’ll definitely give the essential reading a go x

I’ve just restarted after a couple of years out too - we know we can do this! Good shoes make such a difference, so I’m really pleased you’ve had good advice and are sorted now. :)

It’s good to know that someone else is just starting out again! We can do this because we’ve done jt before! The podiatrist is amazing, the tests she did, the advice she gave, the explaining she did all helped me to understand. The orthotics are like magic! I hope you are getting on ok 👌
