I've noticed during my time here that a lot of people express disappointment at not actually achieving 5k in the 9 week programme, or only doing it in a time over 30 minutes.
My graduation run in July was 5k, in 32:33, since when I've been working on both speed and distance. Having narrowly missed out last week, this morning I went out, pushed myself, and at the ripe old age of 55 years, 7 months and 1 day, ran 5k in under 30 minutes for the first time. Ever.
I hadn't run further than the bus stop until May this year since leaving school... at one stage I was pushing 25 stone... so for anyone who is having difficulty getting motivated, or being constantly hassled by gremlins, just keep this in mind;
Your words are inspirational, thank you! I’m 54, have asthma and like you have not ran since leaving school. I read the posts in this community like yours and it gives me the motivation I need to continue. I’m up to W3R3 😀
Well done! You've done the hardest part, actually getting up and starting the programme. There will be ups and downs, I've had days when my heart felt like it wanted to emulate John Hurt in Alien, but ultimately there's no feeling quite like reaching the end of Week 9. Keep going and good luck!
Wow ! Well done .... I'm about to turn 55 next week ..... overweight & stressed BUT reading your post just now has given me the motivation to keep going ...... W2 R2 done this morning ...... thank you for inspiring me
You're welcome! I'd just turned 55 when I started, I still have about 5 kilos to go before I'm no longer overweight, and 5 years to go before I can retire and no longer be stressed, but for a couple of hours a week all that matters is me and the road (and the occasional squirrel, swan or dog on an extending lead) and that's good for the physical and mental health. Keep it up!
