Aches in new running shoes

I ran for the first time in my new trainers today and my calves really hurt. Could this be because up until today I’ve been running in the equivalent of having two slices of wafer thin ham strapped to my soles?! 🤷🏼‍♂️

Try alternating your old and new shoes, breaking in both your shoes and your legs to a different support.

Have you had a gait analysis?

I kept meaning to have one but got impatient during the lockdown and went and bought a pair whilst they were in a sale! 😬 How long do you think I should alternate for?

Just until you no longer ache.

Do you stretch after every run while muscles are still warm and supple, which pulls out contractions, avoiding carrying tensions into the next run and also improves recovery by improving blood flow, as recommended in the guide to the plan.

Without a gait analysis buying shoes is pot luck.

I do stretches before and after my runs. I can’t afford the top range trainers so have to go pretty cheap. Am thinking I need to up my water intake too. Thanks for the help. 😊

There are perfectly good trainers available at mid price, but if they are not suitable for your running style, as identified by a good gait analysis, then whatever their price, they may be a waste of money.

Good running shoes are cheaper than a physio.
