When getting into the longer runs of week 5, my inner ego, Enid, and I have been learning about a "growth mindset". Briefly, this is the belief that talents can be developed though hard work, good strategies and input from others rather than an innate gift.
Our brains are very quick at creating automatic self loathing and we can often voice self limiting beliefs; "I can't do this", " I can't stick to diets", "I am too old to run."
Although using positive language isn't the only answer, it certainly removes one blockage to success. This week, Enid and I, have learnt:"If you think you can, you can. If you think you can't, you can't." The language we use is important.
I can run... and this week we ran 20 minutes, none stop. ππ»ββοΈπ€Έπ»ββοΈ. We will run 5k!
Can anyone recommend any podcasts on self growth and healthy lifestyles for our longer runs? I am finding mixing them up with music seems to work for me.

I like your thought processes. I think more about 'I will' than 'I can', but either way, it's positive compared to all the self brainwashing we do!
Can't recommend any podcasts apart from some I listened to by Tara Brach. I don't have any links but you'd find her), but they're a bit heavy sometimes
You have scaled the dizzy heights of the 20 minute run yet again! Won't be long till you are smashing out that 5k.
I am a great fan of promoting self belief and agree that the language we use is not only a reflection of how we feel but can also influence our emotions. So we need to knock the negative gremlins out of the park - or boot them into their cage!!!
I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions for podcasts though.
Great reply, Fionamags. You are right. It is easier to be positive when you are feeling bright...trickier to catch yourself when the mist descended. Take care and thank you. ππ»ββοΈπ
We'll done you're doing great!! The Nike Run Club app has some guided runs with Andi Puddicome, founder of headspace. I find them quite useful. Worth a try! You'll get that 5k before you know itπ
Thank you so much, Allbarron. I will have a look. I will have enough to run 10k ...there's positive! Take care and happy running. ππ»ββοΈπ
I made the same observation a while back: those who think they can and those who think they can't are both right. (I don't like 'growth mindset' because it reminds me too much of the educational jargon I left behind when I retired. You're quite right though.)
I've listened to some Feel Better, Live More podcasts. They're very good if you get an interesting interviewee.
It is difficult to shake of the education junk that we both walked away from but 18 months on, I am more open to reading about the subject again. Thank you for that tip too...love the Dr...only heard one but will definitely follow. Thank you so much. Take care. ππ»ββοΈπ
Growth mindset is amazing, but it doesn't come easy βΊοΈ.
I used it with my pupils at school and still do with some of the children I tutor.
The word "yet" is magic. When you hear a child say with acknowledgement, "I can't do it yet", spoken with conviction that at some point they know they will, it is wonderful.
Same goes for running.
I can recommend Ferne Cotton's "Happy Place" podcasts. There are several series of them, so plenty to choose from. I've listened to a few of them now - Dawn French's chat and Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black's one from the first series were wonderful, as are the chats with people from non-celebrity backgrounds.
Yes, it is funny to come back to theories that we used to talk about when teaching at a college. But reading about them now seems different applying them to me rather than trying to encouraging others to adopt them. ππ€£
Thank you for the tip...that is one series I have followed and I agree - love them. They are highly recommend. ππ»ββοΈ
Hi. Cant recommend any podcasts but the insight timer app has some great meditation/music etc on positivity. Btw I completed my 20 min run today. Now I believe i can do it and you can too
That's brilliant, Smile23. We can do this. ππΌAll together!ππ½ππΌββοΈπ€Έπ»ββοΈ Thank you for your support and ideas. I will follow that up. Happy running...I will look out for your posts. ππ»ββοΈ
Love it...very witty. Double graduation seems a way off yet but pleased to run the 20 mins and had a big grin on myself. Funny how I would have been gutted if that was all I had run back in March. It is all relative isn't it? Happy days and take care. Thank you for your support as always. πππ»ββοΈπ€Έπ»ββοΈ
I think we all need to be more aware of the power of words both positive and negative. All too often you hear the old saying "words can't hurt you" , which may be true physically but not mentally.
I like the idea of us all having our own cheerleaders whispering positivity into our ears throughout the day.
As to mindset podcasts I can't be much help as I really prefer to run in the quiet although I have been picking through the vast list of guests on Desert Island Discs recently.
I can see I may have to paint Enid in a cheer leader costume if I manage to graduate second time through. ππ£ I think running "naked" of sound is very peaceful. Happy running and take care. π
Enidβs looking very relaxed and carefree there Nilsam and you definitely can. Iβve just been reading Self Compassion by Kristin Neff, all about the importance of not beating ourselves up and developing instead a kind compassion towards ourselves. Support from others is so important but if we can be our own best friend we will always have someone to to turn to who believes in us. ππ€
This is really supportive and helpful, JorgeRuns. I have been reading the book 'blurb" and checking it out on an audio sample. I think it may be one I would prefer in hard copy so I can easily re read and refer to chapters but tempted to listen too. I really appreciate the suggestion and the different way of thinking of support. Thank you. πππ»ββοΈ
We will be learning together ...I can see I may be just on the tip of the iceberg with the number of suggestions. My reading list is expanding. πππ
